On June 24, Jessica McLaughlin, a 24-year-old clerk at a Hollywood 7‑Eleven store, was involved in a confrontation with her manager. What began as a verbal disagreement escalated into a violent assault: according to Jessica’s brother, the manager sat on her chest, applied full body weight, and restricted her breathing. Co-workers who intervened were reportedly pushed aside as Jessica collapsed.

Desperate Fight for Survival for the 7-Eleven Employee

Immediately after the assault, fellow employees performed CPR while calls were made for emergency assistance. Paramedics rushed Jessica to Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, where she remained unresponsive and on life support. Despite the efforts of doctors and family members, she was declared brain-dead after suffering severe oxygen deprivation. Her life support was withdrawn on July 2, surrounded by loved ones.

Investigation Underway and Suspect at Large

The Los Angeles Police Department has classified the case as a homicide investigation. Video surveillance from the store has been seized, but authorities have not released it publicly. The suspect—Jessica’s manager—fled the scene on a bicycle and remains at large. 7‑Eleven confirms that she was immediately terminated and that company representatives are fully cooperating with law enforcement.

Family Mourns the 7-Eleven Employee, Community Responds

Jessica’s parents, siblings, and boyfriend were present during her final hours. Her brother, Sean, described the harrowing moment when they made the decision, saying it was “the hardest thing we’ve ever faced.” To help cover funeral expenses and memorial costs, the family launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has seen an outpouring of donations.

Corporate Reaction and Public Outcry

Corporate leaders at 7‑Eleven expressed deep sorrow, offering condolences to Jessica’s family and affirming full cooperation with the investigation. At the local level, the community has rallied around the grieving family, sharing condolences and calling for swift justice to ensure safety in all workplaces.

Crime Scene and Past Precedents

Witnesses told police that the manager attempted to delete surveillance footage in the store’s back office before fleeing. Moreover, that act could potentially bring additional charges. The incident has sparked broader conversations about workplace safety and accountability, especially in industries with limited staffing and oversight. This includes 7-Eleven stores as well.
