What if a long-lost love letter from seven decades ago suddenly resurfaced, hidden in a dusty old toolbox?
That is exactly what happened when a Grand Rapids man discovered a 70-year-old love letter penned by a U.S. Air Force corporal to his beloved. But who were these lovers, and what became of their story?
As the letter’s secrets began to unravel, a captivating search ensued to reconnect the past with the present. What mysteries did this old letter hold, and how did it touch the lives of those who uncovered it?
Discovery of a Heartfelt Artifact
Rick Trojanowski, who purchased the old toolbox in 2017, found the letter two years later. Initially stunned by its emotional depth, Trojanowski described the letter saying,
“It’s almost like a true love story. People just don’t write things like that nowadays; it’s almost like poetry”.
The letter, dated 1953, revealed a poignant tale of love and separation. Fleming, stationed in San Francisco, expressed deep remorse for a disagreement with Mary and a profound longing to marry her when he returned.
He wrote in his letter, “Mary, I need you so very much … and I know that I’ll always love you.”
The Search for Mary Lee Cribbs
The letter’s discovery set Trojanowski on a quest to locate Mary or her descendants. He expressed this by saying, “…if we can find the people it belongs to, the kids, I think it’d be really neat for them”.
Despite his efforts to find them through social media, he initially came up empty. The story, however, gained traction, leading FOX 17 to take up the search.
Reunion With Family
The breakthrough came quickly. Within days of the story airing, FOX 17 connected with Abby Cribbs, a relative of Mary Lee Cribbs. Abby, who is Mary’s great-niece, was thrilled to learn about the letter.
Although Mary had passed away in 2004, Abby and her family were moved by the letter’s emotional significance. Abby shared memories of her great aunt, describing her as vibrant and beloved, despite having never met Fleming or knowing about the letter.
“Mary was a spitfire, according to my grandpa”. She had a lot of love for life and a lot of love for people,” said Abby.
She was beautiful. Every family member that I spoke to about her said that she was gorgeous,” she added.
Abby also revealed that her aunt was married, but she had never had children.
A Glimpse Into the Past
Mary, who was 22 at the time the letter was written, eventually moved to San Jose, California, where she lived out her later years. She never married Fleming, but Abby and her family appreciated the glimpse into a cherished part of their ancestor’s life.
Cpl. Fleming, who had a full life after his military service, including marriage and children, passed away in 2017. While attempts to reach his relatives were unsuccessful, the letter’s rediscovery remains a poignant reminder of enduring love and connection across decades.
Preserving Personal Histories
The 70-year-old love letter’s journey from a forgotten toolbox to a family heirloom underscores the timeless nature of love and the importance of preserving personal histories. For those who encounter such relics of the past, they offer a unique and touching window into lives lived and cherished.
