The heartbreaking story of a Bellaire girl’s letter before Camp Mystic floods has captured national attention.

Blakely McCrory, just 8 years old, was enjoying her first summer at the beloved Texas Hill Country camp when flash floods struck over the July 4 weekend. Before the tragedy, she had written a cheerful letter to her mother, telling her how much fun she was having. That letter is now a treasured memory of a vibrant young life lost far too soon.

Blakely, a third-generation Camp Mystic camper and student at Memorial Lutheran School in Houston, had only just begun what should have been a carefree summer. Her mother, Lindsey McLeod McCrory, shared how Blakely’s energy and humor made her unforgettable.

“People wanted to be around her. She was so funny, and she was a prankster,” Lindsey said, recalling how Blakely once hid her pet turtle in her mom’s purse.

The Bellaire girl’s letter before Camp Mystic floods was discovered in her cabin by search crews. In it, Blakely wrote:

“Dear Mom, How are you? I am good.”

She described her experience at camp as “amazing,” saying she had played tennis that day and was excited to go horseback riding next. She also mentioned loving the camp food and sleeping there.

Tragically, just days later, Blakely was among the victims of the deadly flooding that swept through Camp Mystic. Her mother had been traveling in the UK when she received news that Blakely was missing. On July 8, four days after the flood, her family learned the devastating truth: Blakely’s body had been found.

In a public post, Lindsey expressed both grief and faith:

“While we find some comfort in the knowledge that Blakely is happy, safe, and secure in the arms of Jesus, we are beyond shattered and will miss her with every breath we take for the rest of our lives.”

A counselor later told the family that Blakely remained calm during the flood and comforted other campers, telling them not to be afraid.

Lindsey also praised the tireless search teams:

“Deepest thanks go to all the first responders… You brought Blakely home, and for that, we will always be grateful.”

Blakely’s father, Blake McCrory, passed away in March, and her uncle Chanse died in June. Through those losses, and now this one, the McCrory family has faced more than their share of heartbreak in a single year.

Yet through it all, Blakely’s letter, simple, sweet, and full of light, now speaks volumes. It is a reminder of joy, courage, and the lasting impact of one young girl’s life.
