And before that throws you off, it is not technically a Disney release. However, a Mickey Mouse horror movie sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Well, a specific director is trying to make that happen! And while we are used to seeing our favorite mouse in jolly and delightful scenarios, a gruesome one seems intriguing as well!

Why Can This Company Make a Mickey Mouse Horror Movie?

The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain, and independent horror producers are quickly taking advantage of this opportunity. The Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) of 1998, often referred to as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, extended copyright protection for works created on or after January 1, 1978, to the author’s life plus 70 years.

For works created for hire, anonymous works, and pseudonymous works, the copyright lasts for 95 years from the date of publication or 120 years from the date of creation, whichever is shorter. Mickey Mouse officially made his debut in the short film “Steamboat Willie,” which was released on November 18, 1928.

Director Steven LaMorte is also known for his work on the horror parody “The Mean One.” It is a dark take on the Grinch and emphasizes his creative approach. It stems from a genuine love for iconic characters. In an interview, he described filmmakers as “kids in the sandbox.” He expresses a passion for exploring and presenting beloved characters in new and unconventional ways. Moreover, LaMorte sees this as a form of homage. He intends to honor and love the characters rather than merely seek to exploit them for commercial gain.
