Why You Have Already Heard Some Names On the List Of 2024 Movie Release Dates
You are probably already familiar with some of the releases because they were planned to be released in 2023. However, the infamous writer strike of 2023 had other plans.
Writers were looking for increased compensation, particularly in response to the impact of streaming on their earnings. Streaming series typically have shorter seasons, resulting in lower pay per episode and reduced residuals compared to traditional broadcast shows. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is pushing for standardized compensation for screenwriting across theatrical and streaming releases, as well as increased contributions to pension and health funds.
The WGA initiated a strike, citing the companies’ refusal to address their concerns and accusing them of creating a gig economy within a union workforce. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) countered, emphasizing their commitment to the industry’s long-term stability. Negotiations included rejected proposals on minimum staffing for shows.
Did They Succeed?
If seeing the name on the list again this year didn’t convince you, the short answer is yes! The writer’s strike concluded after 148 days on September 27, 2023, and the union’s members will commence voting on the tentative deal on Monday, October 2.
Many see this as a cause for celebration, with President Joe Biden praising the writers’ tentative agreement. He emphasized the importance of employers and employees negotiating in good faith to strengthen businesses and secure fair pay, benefits, and dignity for workers. President Biden is also scheduled to join striking auto workers on their picket line on Tuesday.
The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has decided to end the strike following a leadership vote and is recommending the membership ratify the new contract. The WGA released details of the agreement through a simplified memorandum of agreement (MOA). The leadership expressed pride in the deal, stating that it is exceptional and includes significant gains and protections for writers across all sectors of the membership.
