Billie Eilish and her brother, Finneas O’Connell, continue to make waves in the entertainment industry. With the new win, they have set records at the Oscars once more. But in what way did Billie Eilish set the record as the youngest Oscar winner? Continue reading to find out.
Youngest Oscar Winner
Their journey to Oscar success began just two years ago when Billie and FInneas clinched their first win for the title song from the James Bond film, “No Time To Die.” This award made Eilish the second-youngest winner in the category at that time, at just 20 years old.
This year the talented duo has become the youngest pair to win two Oscars, with Eilish, 22, and O’Connell, 26. They secured their second victory in the Best Original Song category. Their latest triumph comes from the emotionally charged track, “What Was I Made For?”, featured in the movie “Barbie.”
At the 2024 Oscars ceremony, Eilish and O’Connell performed “What Was I Made For?” alongside other Original Song nominees. They captivate the audience with their poignant composition.
“What Was I Made For?” has not only garnered critical acclaim but also achieved commercial success. It boasted over 700 million streams on Spotify. The song also swept major categories at the Grammys earlier this year, winning Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Eilish reflected on the creative process behind “What Was I Made For?” revealing that the song provided an avenue for expression during a challenging period in her life.
“I was also in a weird place mentally in my life. We were in the studio and did come up with stuff, but nothing felt right. I don’t think I was able to be vulnerable and self-aware about my life and surroundings. That makes it hard to write sometimes.”
She added “When we had this new thing to write about that wasn’t my life, it was almost relieving. I didn’t have to worry about how I felt. I could just write from the perspective of this character. What was amazing is immediately after, I realized it was absolutely about me and my life. I didn’t even mean to do that.”
Trailblazers in the Industry
Before their historic victory, only three individuals had won two Oscars by the age of 30, all in the Best Actress category. However, Eilish and O’Connell have broken barriers in a different realm of the film industry.
With their latest award, Eilish and O’Connell they solidified their status as trailblazers in the entertainment industry. They have surpassed a long-standing record set by Luise Rainer in 1938. She was 28 when she won the second Oscar for actress in a leading role. She won the same price the year before.
The other two actresses who have won two Oscars before the age of 30 are Jody Foster and Hilary Swank. The only difference is that they did not win two years in a row.
Triumph at the Oscars
Their victory in the original song category at the Oscars saw them triumph over tough contenders, including another nominee from “Barbie.” It showcases the duo’s prowess in songwriting and musical composition.
Accepting their second Oscar, Eilish expressed gratitude to the Academy and dedicated the award to everyone who resonated with the film and its themes.
As they continue to make history and inspire audiences worldwide, Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape, setting a new standard of achievement for aspiring artists.
