Are we about to witness a new era of Queen B herself? Well, hold down your horses and saddle up indeed! Beyoncé just announced that her new album will be titled “Cowboy Carter.” This unexpected title has left fans speculating about what kind of music and themes she will explore in this highly anticipated release. Here is what we know so far.

What We Know So Far About Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’

The singer announced her new album, titled “Cowboy Carter,” through her website and social media. The album, set to be released on March 29, is anticipated to be a country album, as indicated by its lead singles “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages.” This follows her previous album “Renaissance,” which Beyoncé referred to as “Act I” in the liner notes, hinting at a multi-part project recorded over three years during the pandemic.

Beyoncé concluded her Renaissance era with the release of a supporting tour film in December 2023, accompanied by a surprise single, “MY HOUSE.” During the Super Bowl on Feb. 11, she confirmed a second album in a Verizon commercial with Tony Hale, prompting the release of lead singles and the announcement of Act II on her social media channels.

The First Two Singles of Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter”

Cowboy Carter’s debut singles are “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages.” During this year’s Super Bowl, Beyoncé utilized an NFL Verizon ad to announce new music, reminiscent of her 2016 Super Bowl performance where she debuted “Formation.” Fans eagerly anticipated her announcement, and she later revealed on Instagram that the two new songs, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages,” were available for streaming.

Beyoncé’s songs “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages” were initially exclusive to Tidal before being available on Spotify. On Feb. 26, “Texas Hold ‘Em” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, marking Beyoncé’s ninth chart-topping single. It also topped the Hot Country Songs chart, making Beyoncé the first Black woman to achieve this feat. This success sparked debate online about Beyoncé’s country roots and the erasure of Black artists in the genre. The discussion intensified when an Oklahoma-based radio station initially refused to play Beyoncé’s new song upon a fan’s request, citing its status as a country music station. After facing backlash, the station eventually played the song.

What Else Can We Expect?

Country legend Dolly Parton hinted in an interview that Beyoncé had recorded a version of her hit song “Jolene,” suggesting it might be on Beyoncé’s upcoming country album. Parton expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting her admiration for Beyoncé and their ongoing communication over the years. This detail, coupled with insights from Beyoncé’s previous album’s liner notes and lyrics from “16 Carriages,” supports a fan theory that Beyoncé has been working on a country album for some time. In the song, Beyoncé references 38 summers, hinting at the time of recording, and her mother, Tina Knowles, shared on Instagram that she has loved the record for years, further fueling speculation about the project’s long gestation period.
