The News of the Barbie vs. Bratz TV Series
CBS Studios is set to launch a new TV series based on the book “You Don’t Own Me: How Mattel V. MGA Entertainment Exposed Barbie’s Dark Side.” This series will delve into the lives of Ruth Handler, the inventor of Barbie, and Carter Bryant, the creator of Bratz. The show follows the recent Barbie movie’s success, which provided insights into Handler’s life. It will explore Handler’s personal history, including her daughter Barbara Handler, and her humorous struggles with the IRS.
The Barbie vs. Bratz TV Series Is Based on the Book
Amidst the Barbie craze sparked by Greta Gerwig’s live-action movie, another Barbie-related project is in the works, this time involving Bratz dolls. CBS has acquired the rights to Orly Lobel’s book “You Don’t Own Me: How Mattel V. MGA Entertainment Exposed Barbie’s Dark Side,” which explores the stories of Barbie creator Ruth Handler and Bratz creator Carter Bryant. This acquisition may lead to the development of a TV series. Representatives for CBS, Mattel, and MGA have not yet responded to inquiries.
The series, based on the book, will also shed light on Bryant’s invention of Bratz and the legal battle between Mattel and MGA Entertainment that ensued after Bratz’s release in 2001.
Lobel’s book delves into the rivalry between toy giants Mattel, the creators of Barbie, and MGA, the makers of Bratz. It details how Bryant, a former Mattel employee, began conceiving the concept for Bratz while on leave in 2000, eventually selling the idea to MGA just before leaving Mattel. This led to a protracted legal battle in which Mattel claimed ownership of the Bratz copyright, while MGA argued that the dolls were conceived during Bryant’s break from his former employer.
The Barbie vs. Bratz Rivalry
The copyright dispute over Bratz dolls revolved around whether Carter Bryant, a former Mattel designer, created the Bratz designs during his time at Mattel or during a hiatus in 1998. In 2008, a jury initially ruled in favor of Mattel, but this decision was later overturned. In 2011, a new set of jurors sided with MGA Entertainment, the makers of Bratz.
As for Carter Bryant’s current status, he is celebrating both Bratz and Barbie. On July 18, he expressed pride in creating various toy lines, including Bratz, and also celebrated his time on the Barbie design team. He mentioned his excitement for Barbie’s resurgence and the upcoming Barbie movie.
