Whisky connoisseurs and collectors around the world are always on the lookout for the next rare and valuable bottle to add to their collection. With prices soaring into the thousands, the world of luxury whisky is a market that continues to intrigue and fascinate enthusiasts. But what is the most expensive whisky in the world, and what sets it apart from the rest?

What Is the World’s Most Expensive Whisky?

The Macallan 1926 is an exceptionally rare whisky. It has only 40 bottles produced after aging in sherry casks for 60 years. This makes it the oldest Macallan vintage ever created. Sotheby’s, the auction house, initially estimated its value to be between £750,000 and £1.2 million ($934,274 and $1.4 million). However, they were astounded when the bottle sold for £2,187,500 ($2,724,967). This set a new record for the highest price ever paid for a bottle of spirit or wine at auction, as confirmed by the auction house to AFP news agency.

Sotheby’s head of whisky, Jonny Fowle, sampled a small amount of the Macallan 1926 ahead of the auction. He described it as very rich, with prominent notes of dried fruit, spice, and wood. Fowle emphasized the exceptional quality of the whisky, advising that it should be regarded as something truly remarkable.

Could You Buy Any of the Bottles Before?

Out of the 40 bottles filled in 1986, none were offered for sale. Some of them were exclusively provided to The Macallan’s top clients. Moreover, this exclusivity enhances the allure of the whisky, as seen in previous sales. In 2019, Sotheby’s auctioned a bottle of The Macallan 1926 featuring one of 14 Fine and Rare labels for £1.5 million ($1.9 million), making it the most expensive bottle of wine or spirit ever sold at auction at that time.

The auction in 2023 featured one of the 12 bottles adorned with a label crafted by Italian artist Valerio Adami. It’s noteworthy that a bottle with the same label was reportedly lost during the 2011 Japanese earthquake. Additionally, this particular bottle underwent reconditioning by The Macallan Distillery in Scotland before being auctioned, marking it as the first of the Macallan 1926 bottles to receive such treatment.

Among the 40 bottles of Macallan 1926, 12 were adorned with labels designed by pop artist Sir Peter Blake, and two were released without labels. One of the unlabelled bottles was hand-painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon. This specific bottle made history by becoming the first whiskey bottle to surpass £1 million ($1.2 million) when it was sold in 2018 for £1.2 million ($1.5 million), according to the auction house’s website.
