Comedian and actor Amy Schumer recently shared a humorous and relatable parenting mishap about her son’s name.

On her podcast, “Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith” Schumer revealed that she and her husband, Chris Fischer, decided to change their five-year-old son Gene’s middle name. Apparently, it became necessary after realizing their original choice sounded unintentionally NSFW.

Amy Schumer’s Son Had an Unusual Name

Initially, the couple named their son Gene Attell Fischer, with the middle name Attell as a tribute to Schumer’s friend and fellow comedian, Dave Attell. However, it didn’t take long for them to realize that Gene’s name, when said aloud, sounded like “genital.”

“So do you guys know that Gene, our baby’s name, is officially changed? It’s now Gene David Fischer,” Schumer announced on her podcast. “It was Gene Attell Fischer, but we realized that we, by accident, named our son ‘genital.’ Gene Attell sounds like genital.”

Schumer’s friend and podcast guest, Claudia O’Doherty, chimed in with her own anecdote, revealing that it was her mother who pointed out the unfortunate phonetic resemblance. “My mom was like, ‘Amy’s called her son genital.’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And then she was right.”

Though the initial intention behind the name was sweet, Schumer decided that “David” would be a better middle name, not only avoiding the unintended joke but also honoring her father’s middle name.

The Challenges and Joys of Motherhood

Since giving birth to Gene in May 2019, Schumer has been open about the challenges and transformative nature of motherhood. Reflecting on her experience, she shared that her son has changed her “in a million ways,” even improving her relationship with her own mother. “I’m just nicer to my mom,” she laughed.

Schumer has also been candid about her difficult pregnancy and delivery. She previously described her C-section as “terrifying” and shared that it took over three hours due to her endometriosis. “I was throwing up through the first hour of my C-section,” she recalled on the Informed Pregnancy and Parenting Podcast.

A Personal Battle With Weight Loss Medication

In addition to her naming mishap, Schumer has discussed other aspects of her journey through motherhood, including her brief experience with the weight loss drug Ozempic. Speaking on “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,” Schumer revealed that the medication’s side effects left her feeling too sick to play with her son. “I was so skinny,” she said, but the side effects weren’t “liveable,” prompting her to stop using the drug.
