Gossip and rumors have always circulated around celebrities, but what happens when an old classmate steps forward to share less-than-flattering details?

Recently, a woman who attended high school with Taylor Swift made claims that shed light on a different side of the beloved pop star.

The news that Taylor Swift was not universally liked as a teenager makes us think about popularity. This means how people see each other, and what is real. But, where did all of that Taylor Swift hate even come from?

The High School Taylor Swift Hate Explained

In a TikTok video, Jessica McLane, who went to high school with Taylor Swift in the same town, says most classmates thought Swift’s songs were petty. McLane admits she doesn’t know much about Swift or her music from that time.

She said: “I was a church kid, I didn’t really listen to Taylor Swift, kinda just got into Taylor Swift, so give me some grace.”

What Else Did She Say?

In 2006, Jessica McLane was a freshman in high school while Taylor Swift, a junior, released her hit song “Teardrops on My Guitar” that summer. Swift became very popular that year and subsequently left school to be homeschooled, according to McLane.

After Taylor Swift’s song “Teardrops on My Guitar” was released, she left public school. Her classmates at Henderson High School did not support her newfound success. According to Jessica McLane, many of Swift’s peers actually disliked her during this time. McLane emphasizes they were not just random people but Swift’s actual classmates.

She said that at 16 or 17 years old, Taylor Swift left school to pursue a career. This was despite being told she could not succeed.

What Was the Taylor Swift Hate About?

Many of Taylor Swift’s classmates disliked her because they felt her lyrics were petty. They portrayed her high school peers she dated in a negative way. According to Jessica McLane, these classmates were upset that they were being depicted in hit songs as bad boyfriends while still attending school.

Jessica McLane discusses rumors surrounding Taylor Swift’s rise to fame. She notes that during high school, few people had positive things to say about her. McLane recalls how in 2009, Swift invited their class to the CMA Awards where she performed “Fifteen.” Despite initial excitement, McLane found it unexpected since many classmates didn’t favor Swift.

Is it Hate Anymore?

Jessica McLane reflects on Taylor Swift’s 2009 achievements, noting her impressive awards and memorable performance at the CMA Awards. McLane mentions that Swift’s recent announcement about releasing her album “Midnights” on Kim Kardashian’s birthday made her realize Swift’s intentional and sometimes petty actions.

McLane believes Swift invited their high school class to the CMAs as a subtle message, acknowledging their past negativity towards her. She concludes by giving credit to Swift for her clever move.
