We all know movies use special effects, but have you ever stopped to wonder about the before-and-after special effects?

VFX artists are the hidden heroes behind many of our favorite cinematic moments.

We have listened to the roar of Smaug the dragon in “The Hobbit,” been mesmerized by Neo’s gravity-defying bullet dodges in “The Matrix,” and felt the tension rise during a walker horde attack in “The Walking Dead.”

These iconic scenes, along with the dazzling opulence of Gatsby’s parties in “The Great Gatsby” and the high-octane chases in “The Dark Knight,” wouldn’t be possible without the incredible artistry of special effects (VFX) artists.

Enjoy below the list of before-and-after movie special effects!

Before-and-After Special Effects

1. Life of Pi (2012)

Remember the awe-inspiring Bengal tiger that shared a boat with Pi? Believe it or not, that majestic creature was entirely computer-generated! VFX artists brought the photorealistic tiger to life, making it a central character in the film.

5. Alice in Wonderland (2010)

The whimsical world of Wonderland wouldn’t have been the same without the magic of VFX. VFX artists meticulously crafted this visually stunning and imaginative world for Alice’s adventures.

7. Harry Potter (2001-2011)

The magic of the wizarding world wouldn’t have been complete without the help of VFX.

8. The Hobbit (2012-2014)

The breathtaking landscapes of Middle-earth, from the Shire to the Lonely Mountain, were brought to life with a combination of practical sets and VFX. Imagine Gollum, the ring-obsessed creature, without his distinctive CGI features or Smaug the dragon without his fire-breathing animation. VFX artists played a critical role in creating these iconic characters and their fantastical world.

9. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

The fast-paced world of stockbrokers might not seem like a place for VFX, but it’s used subtly to enhance the film.

Imagine replicating the sheer volume of money thrown around or the extravagant parties without some digital manipulation. VFX artists seamlessly integrated these elements, creating a more immersive and believable atmosphere.

10. The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)

While this epic before-and-after Special Effects scenes rely heavily on VFX to create fantastical creatures and landscapes, it also uses subtler effects. Imagine the breathtaking vistas of Middle-earth without digital enhancements to mountain ranges or the vast armies clashing in battle without some crowd multiplication magic. VFX artists seamlessly blended practical effects with digital manipulation, creating a believable and awe-inspiring world.

11. The Walking Dead (2010-Present)

This gritty horror series relies heavily on practical effects for the walkers’ makeup and prosthetics. However, VFX plays a crucial role in enhancing the walkers’ movements and creating large-scale walker hordes.

Imagine the iconic herd escaping Atlanta without some digital augmentation or the walkers’ attacks without a touch of VFX magic to heighten the horror.

12. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (2011)

The world of vampires and werewolves wouldn’t be complete without some VFX. While the focus might not be on large-scale battles, VFX artists create the vampires’ superhuman speed and strength, as well as the werewolves’ transformations.

Imagine the climactic battle between werewolves and vampires in Eclipse without some digital manipulation or the Cullens’ vampire speed on display without a touch of VFX trickery.

13. The Great Gatsby (2013)

This extravagant before-and-after Special Effects adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel uses VFX to recreate the Roaring Twenties with a touch of opulence.

Imagine Gatsby’s lavish parties without some digital crowd multiplication or the extravagant sets without some digital enhancements. VFX artists helped bring the grandeur and decadence of the era to life on screen.

14. The Dark Knight (2008)

This superhero film relies heavily on practical effects for stunts and fight choreography. However, VFX takes center stage in creating iconic scenes like the Batmobile chases or the Joker’s elaborate schemes. Imagine the high-speed chases without some digital manipulation or the destruction caused by the Joker’s bombs without a touch of VFX magic.

15. The Matrix (1999)

This groundbreaking sci-fi film revolutionized action sequences with its innovative special effects. Imagine the iconic bullet-time sequences where Neo dodges bullets or the mind-bending fight scenes without the pioneering VFX techniques. The Matrix pushed the boundaries of what was possible on screen, creating a visually stunning and immersive experience.

The next time you are swept away by a movie’s fantastical world or left speechless by a seemingly impossible stunt, remember these movies’ before-and-after special effects.
