A federal judge dismissed Justin Baldoni’s countersuit, alongside additional Wayfarer Studios claims against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and associated parties on June 9, marking a significant legal setback in the ongoing dispute. Baldoni’s separate defamation suit against The New York Times was also dismissed.

What Was at Stake for Justin Baldoni

Baldoni, 41, had sought a combined $400 million in damages, alleging extortion, defamation, and interference from Lively, Reynolds, publicist Leslie Sloane, and The Times. He claimed they forced him to revise creative credit and orchestrated a smear campaign after he raised concerns about on-set behavior during the filming of It Ends With Us.

Court’s Ruling

Judge Lewis J. Liman granted motions to dismiss, citing legal protections and inadequate allegations:

  • Lively’s internal complaint to the California Civil Rights Department (CRD) was seen as privileged, negating extortion claims.
  • Defamation allegations against Reynolds, Sloane, and The Times failed, as Baldoni’s team could not show they knew any statements were false.

The judge did, however, allow the possibility for Baldoni to amend claims related to contractual interference and implied covenant breaches by June 23.

Relief for Lively, Reynolds & Publicist

Lively’s attorneys, Esra Hudson and Mike Gottlieb, called the dismissal “a total victory and a complete vindication,” arguing Baldoni’s suit was retaliatory and without merit. They signaled intent to pursue legal fees and punitive damages.

An insider told People that Lively was “obviously relieved” and “cried with relief” upon hearing the decision. Reynolds and Sloane also welcomed the ruling.

What Happens Now?

  • Amendment window: Baldoni can revise his contract-related claims until June 23.
  • Broader defamation suit: His $250 million lawsuit against The Times was also dismissed, leaving few remaining legal avenues.
  • Next court date: The trial for the remaining It Ends With Us matter against Baldoni is scheduled for March 2026.

Public & Industry Reactions

Moreover, friends and colleagues of Lively praised the outcome:

  • Actress Amber Tamblyn lauded the dismissal as “a win for women everywhere who dare to speak out.”
  • Reaction from entertainment insiders emphasized the courage required to bring such accusations forward under the glare of Hollywood scrutiny.
