The Powerball Jackpot Winner
A fortunate Californian won the historic $1.765 billion jackpot in the Wednesday night drawing, as announced by the Multi-State Lottery Association on Thursday morning. The winning ticket had all six numbers: 22, 24, 40, 52, 64 (white balls), and 10 (red Powerball), with a 2X Power Play multiplier.
After nearly 30 years of selling lottery tickets, Nidal Khalil, co-owner of Midway Market & Liquor in Kern County, California, celebrated selling the winning Powerball ticket for the $1.765 billion jackpot drawn on Wednesday. Khalil humorously noted that customers often asked when their time would come to win, and now it had. The store will receive a $1 million award for selling the winning ticket, and Khalil received congratulations from friends and family, including those in his home country of Syria.

Notably, in November, a $2.04 billion ticket was sold at an Altadena gas station owned by another Syrian immigrant, Joseph Chahayed. The man also received a $1 million prize for selling the winning ticket. Khalil’s story is reminiscent of Chahayed’s. Both are Syrian immigrants and small business owners who have been recognized for their lottery ticket sales.
