Chelsea secured a commanding 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The match, held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, was part of FIFA’s first expanded Club World Cup format and drew over 80,000 fans. However, Trump was the main attraction of the event.

Chelsea Crushes PSG in a Historic Final

Cole Palmer delivered a standout performance, scoring two goals and assisting a third, earning the Golden Ball for best player of the tournament. His performance not only sealed Chelsea’s triumph but also solidified his rise as one of Europe’s most promising young talents.

Manager Enzo Maresca praised his team for their “clinical execution and unshakable focus,” particularly in the first half when Chelsea scored all three goals.

Halftime Show Misses the Mark

Despite the on-pitch brilliance, much of the audience’s attention drifted to the halftime show — a new American twist to the traditionally straightforward football format. The show featured performances by Doja Cat, J Balvin, Tems, and Coldplay, but received terrible reviews online. Fans criticized the segment for being “overproduced” and “completely unnecessary,” with many calling it the worst halftime show ever seen at a football event.

Football purists were particularly irked, saying the spectacle disrupted the momentum of the game and detracted from the sport’s essence.

Trump’s Appearance Sparks Boos and Debate

The post-match ceremony took a surprising turn when former U.S. President Donald Trump appeared on stage to present Chelsea with the trophy alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Trump’s presence was met with audible boos from sections of the crowd, as he remained on stage while Chelsea lifted the trophy.

Trump, who had already made headlines earlier in the event for appearing at a Juventus match, seemed unfazed. Players, on the other hand, looked visibly confused. Cole Palmer later commented that he “didn’t expect to see Trump there,” adding to the sense that the moment felt more political than celebratory.

FIFA’s Mixed Reception for American Expansion

The tournament, the first of its kind to feature 32 clubs, has been both praised and criticized. On one hand, it broke attendance records and generated billions in revenue. On the other hand, concerns were raised about fixture congestion, injuries, and the commercialization of the sport.

While FIFA called the event a “resounding success,” many fans and commentators questioned whether the addition of halftime shows and celebrity appearances was a step too far from football’s roots.

A Win to Remember — With a Side of Controversy

Chelsea’s victory should have been the headline. Instead, the conversation has been split between their commanding performance and the optics of a political figure sharing the spotlight. While fans will remember the goals and glory, they’ll also remember the boos, the awkward stage moments, and the lingering debate about what football’s future should look like.
