A student who invested just $27 in Bitcoin for a school project forgot all about it, until years later, when it turned into a massive fortune.

A $27 Bet That Changed Everything

Kristoffer Koch was 25 years old in 2009 when he read a paper by Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. Curious about the new digital currency, he bought 5,000 Bitcoins.

At the time, Bitcoin had no real value. Koch later said, “All you could buy were alpaca socks.” He soon forgot about the investment and focused on getting a job.

Four years later, Koch saw news about Bitcoin’s rising value. He logged back into his account and found it was now worth $850,000.

He had turned a $27 bet into a life-changing sum.

In 2013, Koch sold a fifth of his Bitcoins and bought a luxury apartment in Oslo. The rest of his Bitcoins stayed untouched.

Today, those remaining coins would be worth over $500 million.

Koch admitted it took him time to even remember his wallet password. “Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined this,” he told local media.

What started as a small school project turned into one of the luckiest investments ever.
