How did Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne’s assisted suicide pact affect their children’s views on euthanasia?

Imagine facing a future where your mind or body fails you, and deciding with your loved one how to handle it.

For Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, this wasn’t just a thought—it was a plan.

The famous couple, known for their rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle and reality TV show, made headlines with their decision to consider assisted suicide if faced with severe illness.

This article explores their pact, why they made it, and what their family has said about it.

Sharon Osbourne first shared their plan in her 2007 memoir, Survivor: My Story – The Next Chapter. After watching her father, Don Arden, suffer from Alzheimer’s disease until his death in 2007, Sharon decided she didn’t want to endure the same pain. She and Ozzy agreed that if either of them developed a brain-affecting illness like Alzheimer’s, they would travel to Dignitas, a Swiss organization that helps with physician-assisted suicide.

Sharon explained in a 2007 interview with The Mirror that they believed strongly in euthanasia and wanted to avoid suffering.

‘We believe 100 per cent in euthanasia so have drawn up plans to go to the assisted suicide flat in Switzerland if we ever have an illness that affects our brains. If Ozzy or I ever got Alzheimer’s, that’s it – we’d be off.’

They even discussed it with their children—Kelly, Jack, and Aimee—who agreed to support their wishes.

In 2014, Ozzy expanded on this idea, saying he’d choose assisted suicide for any “life-threatening condition” that left him unable to live as he wanted, like being paralyzed or dependent on machines. He told The Mirror, “If I can’t get up and go to the bathroom myself, I’ve said to Sharon, ‘Just turn the machine off.’” This pact was about maintaining control over their lives and sparing their family the burden of prolonged suffering.

The Family’s Response

The Osbournes revisited this topic in a 2023 episode of The Osbournes Podcast. Their son Jack asked if the euthanasia plan was still in place. Sharon laughed and said, “Do you think we’re gonna suffer?”

She explained that mental and physical pain together would be too much, adding, “If I can’t feed myself or go to the bathroom, see ya.” Kelly, however, pushed back, asking what if they could survive. Sharon was firm, saying she wouldn’t want to live if she lost basic abilities.

In July 2025, just weeks before Ozzy’s death at age 76, their daughter Kelly Osbourne spoke out against rumors. She posted on Instagram Stories, saying, “Stop making articles or posts about how you think my parents are having a suicide pact.

That was bulls**t my mom said to get attention one time. And my dad’s not dying. Stop!” Kelly also addressed fake AI-generated videos claiming Ozzy was near death, clarifying that while he had Parkinson’s and mobility issues, he wasn’t dying at the time.

What It Means Today

The Osbournes’ openness about their assisted suicide pact sparked conversations about euthanasia and personal choice. After Ozzy’s passing on July 22, 2025, their plan drew renewed attention. While there’s no evidence they acted on it, their story highlights the tough choices people face when thinking about severe illness.

Sharon and Ozzy wanted to protect their dignity and spare their children pain, a decision rooted in their love for each other and their family. Their candid discussions show how even celebrities grapple with life’s hardest questions.

This pact wasn’t about giving up but about choosing how to face the end. It’s a reminder that everyone has the right to think about their future and make plans that feel right for them. The Osbournes’ story encourages us to talk openly about difficult topics like illness and death, even if the answers aren’t easy.
