The quake hit off Russia’s Kuril Islands and sent tsunami warnings across the Pacific.
In Hawaii, waves struck the coastline early Wednesday. Governor Josh Green told residents to get to higher ground or shelter in strong buildings. Sirens wailed, and coastal zones were evacuated.
By morning, Oahu residents were told they could return home. But the ocean still posed a risk. Strong currents remained, and officials continued to monitor the danger closely
