Colorado Dentist Gets Life for Poisoning Wife with Smoothies

In March 2023, dentist James Toliver Craig, 47, began secretly dosing his wife, Angela Craig, with poison via her protein shakes.

Over a span of around ten days, he used cyanide, tetrahydrozoline (an eye‑drop ingredient), and possibly arsenic. His plan culminated in a fatal dose administered while Angela was hospitalized. She died shortly thereafter. Craig was convicted of first-degree murder and related charges, receiving life in prison without parole.

Investigators uncovered a chilling online trail: Craig had looked up topics like “how many grams of arsenic kill a human”, “is arsenic detectable in autopsies,” and “how to make murder look like a heart attack.” Toxicology confirmed both cyanide and tetrahydrozoline in Angela’s system.

The jury rejected Craig’s claim that her death was a suicide, finding instead that it was premeditated and deliberate.

Family Betrayal and Double Lives

Angela’s six children and extended family delivered emotional testimonies about her devotion as a mother and church choir director.

One daughter tearfully called her father “the villain” in her own story. Court testimony also revealed Craig’s web of deceit: he was carrying on multiple affairs, notably with a Texas orthodontist with whom he exchanged over 4,000 messages in 18 days.

He also allegedly attempted to recruit his daughter to fabricate a deepfake video to make it appear Angela requested poisonous substances. Meanwhile, he is accused of soliciting other inmates to kill the lead detective in the case.

Prosecutors painted Craig as a man desperate to prevent divorce and escape financial ruin.

They uncovered gambling debts, bankruptcy filings, and news of a failing dental practice. He allegedly believed murdering his wife would preserve his reputation and avoid messy personal consequences.

A jury returned guilty verdicts on all charges, including solicitation to commit perjury, tampering with evidence, and actionable attempts to obstruct justice. District Judge Shay Whitaker imposed the mandatory sentence: life behind bars with no chance of release.
