Authorities in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, are investigating a devastating incident at Atwood Lake. An Amish family from Holmes County was visiting the campground when things took a fatal turn.
Around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, the mother allegedly drove a golf cart into the lake, carrying her teenage children—including her 15-year-old daughter and twin 18-year-old sons—all of whom managed to escape uninjured.
Ominous Encounters and Missing Family Members
First responders at the scene were alarmed by the mother’s disconnected behavior, including statements suggesting she had “given her son to the Lord” and was conversing with God.
Those comments raised immediate concerns about the safety of the husband and the couple’s 4-year-old son, both of whom were missing.
The Shocking Recovery
Authorities launched a search and soon found the boy’s body near the edge of the dock around 6 p.m.
That evening, divers worked diligently until the early hours of Sunday, recovering the husband’s body from the same area around 8:30 a.m. The coroner has confirmed the identities but is withholding their names pending family notification.
Mental Health Concerns and Investigation
The mother was hospitalized for mental health evaluation following the incident. Deputies suspect “spiritual delusion” may have factored into the event. Investigators believe she may have been acting under a religious trance.
She is expected to face serious charges, including aggravated murder, after evaluation.
A Community in Shock
The Amish community, typically private by nature, issued a heartfelt statement condemning the tragedy, clarifying it was not reflective of their values, but instead the result of a mental crisis.

Extended family members are now caring for the surviving children, hoping to begin the long path toward healing.
Law Enforcement’s Next Steps
Authorities have confirmed that once the mother is medically cleared from her psychiatric evaluation, she will be formally booked and arraigned. Prosecutors in Tuscarawas County are preparing to present the case before a grand jury, with charges likely to include multiple counts of aggravated murder, attempted murder for the children who survived, and child endangerment.
Sheriff Orvis Campbell emphasized that while mental health will play a role in the legal proceedings, the severity of the crimes demands accountability.
Impact on the Surviving Children
The Amish family’s three teenage children, who witnessed both the golf cart plunge and the aftermath of their father and younger brother’s deaths, are now in the custody of relatives. Local counselors and child protection services are assisting them as they process the traumatic loss.
Experts note that recovery will be a long-term journey, with potential lifelong effects on their emotional well-being. The case has sparked broader conversations about mental health awareness within close-knit Amish communities, where discussions of psychiatric care are often limited.
