Europe Is Banning Gel Nail Polish, Here’s Why

The European Union has officially prohibited the use of trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO) — a common photoinitiator in gel nail polishes — as of September 1, 2025.
The move stems from the EU classifying TPO as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction (CMR category 1B), prompting regulators to act under precautionary safety guidelines despite limited human-specific studies.
Why TPO Nail Polish Was Targeted
TPO helps gel polish harden and achieves that signature glossy, long-lasting finish under UV or LED light.
However, animal studies—including tests on rodents—have linked high doses of TPO to reproductive issues, liver and lung damage, and reduced fertility, which influenced its CMR classification.
Nail Polish Impact Across the EU
As of September 1, salons across all 27 EU member states (including EU-adhering countries like Norway and Switzerland) must stop using and disposing of TPO-containing products, and manufacturers must reformulate their formulas.
Reactions from the Industry
The decision has been met with both acceptance and concern. Some industry figures see it as a necessary update for consumer safety.
Others warn that the lack of human data makes the ban overly cautious, potentially harming small businesses economically.
What About the U.S.?
In the U.S., TPO remains legal and is still widely used. Experts say the FDA is unlikely to impose a ban soon, citing the need for stronger human-based evidence before regulatory action.

Nonetheless, some brands voluntarily remove TPO from their U.S. lines to align with global reformulation trends.
Safety Tips for Nail Polish Consumers
While no outright ban on gel manicures exists, those concerned—especially pregnant individuals or those trying to conceive—may prefer TPO-free products. Dermatologists also recommend proper application, protective measures like base coats or cuticle creams, and limiting UV exposure from curing lamps.
