Jimmy Kimmel made comments in “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” about the killing of Charlie Kirk that sparked backlash. He criticized people in “MAGA land” for trying to frame the suspect as anything other than one of their own, and accused political figures of using the murder to score points. These remarks came during his opening monologues earlier in the week.

In response, Nexstar Media Group—owner of many ABC affiliate stations—called the comments “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse,” and decided to preempt the show on its stations. Shortly after, ABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would be suspended indefinitely.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr also weighed in, saying that broadcasters could face regulatory scrutiny over the comments. He called the remarks “truly sick” and suggested that ABC and Disney might not be fulfilling their public interest obligations under their broadcast licenses.

Reactions & Jimmy Kimmel Fallout

  • Nexstar said airing the show under these circumstances is “not in the public interest” and believed pulling it was the right move to allow more civil discourse.
  • Sinclair Broadcast Group also joined in preempting the show on its ABC affiliates.
  • Donald Trump praised the suspension, calling it a courageous move by ABC.
  • On the other side, critics—including some Democratic leaders, free speech advocates, and media watchers—argued the move echoes political pressure and censorship. They warn about the media being punished for commentary and the risk of chilling speech.

Why It’s Significant

  • It marks a major tension point between broadcast media obligations, political commentary, and regulatory oversight. The FCC’s involvement—threatening possible license issues—raises the stakes.
  • The decision reflects increasing polarization in how public discourse around violence, political identity, and responsibility is handled. What counts as acceptable commentary is under scrutiny.
  • Suspensions like this are rare, especially for long-running late-night shows. Kimmel has hosted since 2003, making this a significant disruption in U.S. broadcast television.

Outstanding Questions

  • How long will the suspension last? “Indefinitely” is open-ended.
  • Will Kimmel issue a public apology or clarification? As of the latest reports, he had not responded.
  • Where do regulatory actions go from here? Will ABC/Disney face FCC consequences?
  • What precedent does this set for late-night hosts and for broadcasters’ willingness to air shows that engage in heated political commentary?
