Former President Joe Biden has publicly commended Donald Trump’s recent Gaza ceasefire agreement — but he also reminded audiences that his own administration laid substantial groundwork.

His statements have drawn both applause and criticism, prompting discussion about legacy, diplomacy, and political positioning.

Biden’s Praise — with a Twist

In a post on social media, Biden expressed being “deeply grateful and relieved” about the release of the last Israeli hostages under the agreement. He wrote that the road to this peace deal “was not easy” and that his administration “worked relentlessly to bring hostages home, get relief to Palestinian civilians, and end the war.”

Then, acknowledging Trump’s role, he said: “I commend President Trump and his team for their work to get a renewed ceasefire deal over the finish line.” According to the UNILAD report, Biden’s remarks also implied that the deal builds upon policies and diplomatic efforts his administration initiated.

Trump Fires Back — And Stakes His Claim

Trump, for his part, has continued to frame the agreement as a major foreign policy achievement under his leadership. In recent statements, he criticized Biden’s past administration, saying the conflict was harder to resolve due to poor prior leadership.

The battle over credit is fierce. While Biden emphasizes continuity and incremental work, Trump seeks to present his own version as a decisive, culminating moment in U.S. diplomacy.

Why the Debate Over Credit Matters

  • Legacy and narrative control: Peace deals are powerful symbols. Being acknowledged as the one who “ended” or “brokered” peace can define a presidency.
  • Continuity vs. disruption: Biden argues that lasting diplomacy is cumulative; Trump wants to cast the deal as a fresh breakthrough.
  • Political advantage: With elections likely looming, the ability to market foreign policy success matters in domestic politics.
  • Public perception of diplomacy: Ordinary people often see deals in terms of who signed headlines — not the slow work behind the scenes.

Room for More Drama — and Obstacles Ahead

Even with this public sparring, the real proof of the deal’s value lies in implementation. Key challenges remain:

  • Ensuring the ceasefire holds
  • Managing the postwar governance of Gaza
  • Demilitarization and security guarantees
  • Humanitarian reconstruction and rebuilding
  • Maintaining regional support, not just U.S. involvement

If the plan falters, both Biden and Trump could see their reputations hinge on how well it endures or collapses.
