Donald Trump, alongside leaders from Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey, officially signed a Gaza ceasefire agreement this week in Egypt — a high-stakes moment meant to usher in peace after more than two years of conflict

But as the real test looms, many are asking: will words become action?

What the Ceasefire Actually Says

  • The agreement marks the first phase of Trump’s 20-point Gaza peace plan, focusing on halting hostilities and facilitating hostage exchanges.
  • Hamas has handed over the bodies of deceased Israeli captives, while Israel is releasing Palestinian detainees in return.
  • Trump insists that Hamas has committed to disarmament — and warned that the U.S. would forcibly disarm them if they fail to comply.
  • Despite the ceasefire, violations have already been reported: in Gaza, at least nine people were killed as residents tried to return home.
  • Israel has announced it will cut the flow of aid into Gaza by half, accusing Hamas of delays in delivering the bodies of slain captives.

Diplomacy, Showmanship — or Substance?

For Trump and his backers, the moment is being framed as a diplomatic success. He positioned himself as the broker who finally brought the warring parties to the table. But critics argue the agreement is charismatic on paper and slim on enforceability.

Key concerns include:

  • Disarmament: How will Hamas be disarmed in reality? Will there be monitoring, inspections, or external forces?
  • Aid and reconstruction: Cutting aid even under a ceasefire fuels fears of renewed suffering in Gaza.
  • Enforcement mechanisms: What happens if either party breaks the deal? Will there be consequences?
  • Power vacuum and governance: Gaza’s future leadership is unclear — will an interim government take over? Who ensures stability?

Trump and his team see the signing as just the beginning. They say phase two of the peace process, involving reconstruction and governance models, must now begin in earnest.

Why This Holds Global Significance

  • Regional ripple effects: How this plays out will influence power dynamics in the Middle East — especially among Egypt, Qatar, Israel, and Iran.
  • Precedent for conflict resolution: A successful implementation could reshape how future wars are ended diplomatically.
  • Public sentiment: People on both sides desperately want peace. Failure risks reigniting hatred and fueling despair.
  • Legacy & leadership: For Trump, this is a foreign policy milestone. If it collapses, critics will say it was mostly talk.
