A fit and healthy 39-year-old mother, Krystal Maeyke, who died after being diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, has emphasised the warning signs she initially dismissed—urging others not to do the same.

Her Story: From “Nothing Serious” to Sudden Diagnosis

Krystal, based in a remote region of Australia, said her world changed on 30 May 2023 when she was air-lifted to hospital and told she had cancer that had spread extensively across her abdomen, liver, and ovaries after beginning in the bowel.

Before the diagnosis, she noticed several symptoms over the course of about three months: sharp, stabbing abdominal pains; feeling constantly tired; night sweats; irregular bowel movements, which she attributed to IBS; and a lump she thought was a swollen lymph node.

Despite exercising regularly, eating well, and looking after her young son, Krystal told the Daily Mail she believed nothing sinister was going on because she considered herself healthy. It was only when the pain became intolerable that she sought urgent care.

Common Symptoms She Ignored & What Experts Say

Krystal’s case highlights several symptoms that are key to recognising bowel cancer early:

  • Changes in bowel habits (going more or less often, feeling like you still need to go)
  • Tummy pain or cramps, sometimes severe or stabbing
  • A lump in the abdomen or around the bowel area
  • Unexplained tiredness or fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Weight loss without trying or feeling unusually full or bloated
  • Night sweats (while this isn’t always on standard lists, Krystal mentioned it as a symptom)

According to UK charity Bowel Cancer UK (cited in the article), even though having one or more of these symptoms doesn’t mean you have cancer, they should not be ignored—particularly if they last more than a few weeks.

Why the Message Matters

Bowel cancer is traditionally seen in older adults, but it’s increasingly being diagnosed in younger people who may assume they’re too young or healthy for such a serious condition. Krystal’s story serves as a reminder that good health and youth don’t guarantee immunity.

Her message: If something feels wrong, get checked. She urged others not to dismiss what seem like minor symptoms—especially if they persist. As she said, “I thought it wasn’t anything sinister. That’s why it became advanced.”

What to Do If You Recognize Any of These Signs

  • Keep track of your bowel habits and any changes you notice.
  • Don’t ignore persistent pain, tiredness, or lumps.
  • Ask your doctor about screening or referral—especially if you have a family history or multiple symptoms.
  • Be your own health advocate: if you feel something’s off, push for tests or a second opinion.
