Australia has officially begun enforcing a world-first ban on social media use by children under 16, blocking access to major platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube as of midnight on 10 December 2025.

The law represents a dramatic shift in how governments can regulate online life for young people and is being closely watched by regulators around the world.

What the Asutralia Ban Requires

Under the new legislation, ten of the largest social media platforms — including TikTok, Meta’s Instagram and Facebook, Alphabet’s YouTube, Snapchat, Reddit, Twitch, X, Threads and more — must block users under 16 from holding or accessing accounts. Companies that fail to take “reasonable steps” to enforce the ban risk fines of up to A$49.5 million (about $33 million) per offence.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the ban a “proud day” for families and a sign that policymakers can act to reduce online harms that have exceeded earlier regulatory efforts. He framed the law as protecting young Australians from pressures like bullying, harmful content and addictive engagement that critics link to mental health challenges.

Why It’s a Global First

No other country has gone as far as Australia in banning under-16s from accessing major social media platforms outright. The decision followed a lengthy political process and reflects mounting concern about the effects of social media on children’s well-being. Parents, child advocates and some mental health professionals welcomed the ban, saying it could reduce anxiety, exposure to predatory content and harmful comparisons online.

At the same time, tech giants and free-speech advocates criticised the law as too broad and potentially ineffective, noting challenges around age verification and the likelihood that motivated teens will find workarounds. Platforms have been forced to implement new age checks, from selfies and behavior analysis to optional ID verification, though enforcement is expected to be imperfect at the outset.

How It’s Being Enforced in Australia and Challenges

The ban places the burden of enforcement on social media companies rather than children or parents. Platforms must use a mix of tools — including AI age estimation, selfies and optional ID checks — to try to verify users’ ages before granting access or allowing users to maintain accounts.

Despite these efforts, some journalists and experts warn that many children may still slip through or continue accessing apps without signing in, and that the system could create false positives or widespread workarounds.

Reactions From Teens and Society

In the hours before the ban took effect, Australian teenagers posted farewell messages on platforms they were about to lose access to, expressing sadness, disbelief and frustration about being cut off from communities and friendships they had formed online. Many called the ban “the end” of a defining part of their daily lives.

Parents and child advocates, meanwhile, offered mixed responses: some hailed the move as a necessary defense against bullying and unhealthy online habits, while others worried it might isolate young people or not address deeper issues like digital literacy and well-being.

The new law has already prompted legal challenges, including a High Court case filed by U.S.-based Reddit arguing that the ban infringes on implied freedoms of political communication and raises privacy concerns. That challenge is expected to be heard in early 2026 and could shape how far governments can go in regulating online speech.

Countries such as Denmark, Malaysia, France and New Zealand are reportedly exploring similar age-based regulatory ideas, making Australia’s move a potential global precedent in digital policy debates.
