A UK court is hearing a deeply emotional case involving a separated couple, the sudden death of two rescue dogs, and a violent confrontation that prosecutors say nearly turned fatal. What began as a visit to discuss practical matters between estranged spouses quickly escalated into a moment that would change both of their lives.

A Marriage Breakdown and a Dispute Over Pets

Claire Bridger, 64, and her husband, Keith Bridger, had been separated for around a year at the time of the incident. During the separation, Keith remained in the former family home in Bramerton, Norfolk, where the couple’s two rescue dachshunds continued to live with him.

The dogs, adopted in 2020 and 2021, reportedly suffered from behavioural problems that became increasingly difficult to manage in Keith’s small flat. Prosecutors say he ultimately decided to have the animals euthanised, believing he could not safely care for them and that rehoming was not a viable option.

The Visit That Turned Violent

The court heard that Claire Bridger visited her estranged husband’s home in July 2024 to discuss mediation costs and ongoing matters connected to their separation. During the visit, Keith informed her that the dogs had been put down — something she claims she had not been told beforehand.

According to her testimony, the news triggered an overwhelming emotional response. Claire told the court she “just saw red” after learning of the dogs’ deaths, describing a sudden loss of control rather than a deliberate act.

The Stabbing and Emergency Response

Prosecutors allege that during the confrontation, Claire grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Keith multiple times in the chest and abdomen. The injuries were described as life-threatening, prompting an urgent emergency response.

Neighbours reportedly intervened and restrained Claire until police arrived. Keith was taken to the hospital, where he received treatment for his wounds and later survived the attack.

Charges and Court Proceedings

Claire Bridger has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder but guilty to wounding with intent. Her defence argues that the stabbing was not premeditated and occurred during a moment of extreme emotional distress, compounded by the shock of learning about the dogs’ euthanasia.

Prosecutors, however, maintain that the severity and number of injuries indicate an intention to cause serious harm. Jurors are being asked to assess whether the act was a spontaneous emotional reaction or a criminal act meeting the threshold for attempted murder.

Why the Case Has Struck a Nerve

The case has drawn significant public attention because it touches on grief, attachment to pets, and the emotional volatility of relationship breakdowns. For many, the death of companion animals carries immense emotional weight, while others stress that personal devastation can never justify violence.

As the trial continues, the court must balance sympathy for emotional trauma with the legal standards surrounding intent, responsibility, and accountability.
