Ace Frehley, the original lead guitarist and co-founding member of KISS, passed away on October 16, 2025, after suffering complications from a fall in his home studio.

His family announced his death in a statement saying they were “devastated and heartbroken.”

From Bronx Roots to Rock Stardom

Born Paul Daniel Frehley in New York City on April 27, 1951, he was drawn to the guitar from an early age. Though largely self-taught, his style became a defining voice in hard rock and glam music.

In 1973, Frehley answered a classified ad placed by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons seeking a guitarist. The match would spark the formation of KISS. His persona—the “Spaceman” or “Space Ace”—became iconic, with silver makeup, dramatic effects, and theatrical flair onstage.

With KISS, Frehley played on many of their classic albums, including KISS, Destroyer, Alive!, Love Gun, and others. His riffs, solos, and image helped define the band’s identity during its formative years.

Solo Career and Later Years

Frehley left KISS in 1982 due to creative differences but continued his musical journey with solo projects and his band Frehley’s Comet.

His solo work included his cover hit “New York Groove,” and he released multiple albums over the decades. He also returned to KISS for reunion tours in the 1990s and early 2000s, maintaining a presence in both the band’s legacy and his personal catalog.

In 2025, KISS was chosen as a Kennedy Center Honoree. However, Frehley had already canceled his remaining tour dates earlier in the year, citing health issues and after a fall in his home studio that resulted in a brain bleed.

The Final Chapter

According to reports, Frehley fell in his home studio in September and was later hospitalized with a brain bleed. He was placed on life support, and his condition deteriorated. His family confirmed he died in Morristown, New Jersey, surrounded by loved ones.

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley released a joint tribute, calling Frehley an “essential and irreplaceable rock soldier” during KISS’s pivotal chapters.

Legacy and Impact

Ace Frehley’s influence extends far beyond his four-string mastery. His image, performance style, and fearless creativity helped pave the way for theatrical rock and influenced countless guitarists. Even rivals and peers often cited him as an inspiration.

Though KISS’s final touring days progressed without him, Frehley’s signature sound and spirit remain integral to the band’s legacy. His passing marks the end of an era in rock history.
