Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has joined bipartisan critics of the Justice Department’s handling of the newly released Jeffrey Epstein files, calling on President Donald Trump to ensure every document is published publicly. A spokesperson for Clinton, Angel Ureña, said the partial release so far and the way it was handled make it appear as though “someone or something is being protected,” and stressed that the former president has nothing to hide.

Clinton’s demand comes amid mounting criticism of the Justice Department’s release process, which has included thousands of pages of documents and images but also heavy redactions, delayed documents, and files briefly removed from public access. Under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, signed by Trump earlier this year, the DOJ was legally obligated to disclose all non-classified materials related to Epstein by a set deadline — a requirement critics argue has not been met.

What Clinton Is Saying

In a statement posted on social media, Clinton’s spokesperson wrote that any records referring to, mentioning, or containing photographs of the former president should be made public immediately, including grand jury transcripts, interview notes, investigative findings, and photos. Ureña said that the incomplete release, combined with selective disclosures and redactions, raises suspicions that information might be withheld for reasons other than victim privacy or legal requirements.

Clinton’s office emphasised that he has been previously cleared by prosecutors — including during multiple reviews of his past associations — and that any delay or opaque handling of records could unfairly suggest wrongdoing. “We need no such protection,” the statement said, adding that the current rollout of files creates confusion rather than clarity.

Broader Backlash to the Partial Release

Clinton’s call isn’t isolated. Bipartisan lawmakers and Epstein survivors have also criticised the DOJ’s approach to the release, with many saying the materials thus far are incomplete, heavily redacted, or selectively timed. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has introduced a resolution to pursue legal action against the DOJ for failing to fully comply with the Transparency Act, and representatives from both parties, including Reps. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie have threatened contempt actions against Attorney General Pam Bondi for incomplete disclosure.

Survivors of Epstein’s abuse have also spoken out, saying that extensive redactions make it difficult to locate documents relevant to their legal cases or public understanding, and that release delays undermine confidence in government transparency.

Administration and DOJ Response

The Department of Justice has defended its handling of the release, saying it is reviewing hundreds of thousands of pages to protect victim identities and comply with legal restrictions on sensitive information, including protecting victims’ names and imagery. Officials argue the review process necessarily delays a complete rollout.

However, critics — including Clinton’s team — say privacy considerations should be balanced with the law’s mandate and that any legitimately redacted documents should be released with clear explanations. Clinton’s spokesperson directly challenged the Justice Department to stop implying wrongdoing through selective disclosures and to complete the files’ publication without further delay.
