Imagine receiving a bonus that’s a whopping 130% of your salary, just for running two miles every day! It sounds like a dream come true, right? Well, one Chinese company is making this a reality for its employees.

Physical activity has numerous health benefits, including weight management, improved mental health, and increased productivity. But is this Chinese company really giving out bonuses for that?

Chinese Company Sends Bonuses for Running Miles

Guangdong Dongpo Paper Co. in Guangdong province, China, has implemented a unique incentive program. It is where employee bonuses are linked to their monthly physical activity, including running, hiking, or walking miles. This initiative aims to encourage a healthier lifestyle among its workforce.

Employees at Guangdong Dongpo Paper Co. can earn bonuses based on their monthly physical activity levels. Those who achieve at least 62 miles will receive an annual bonus equivalent to 130% of their monthly salary, while those who log at least 31 miles monthly will earn an annual bonus equal to one month’s salary.

How Does it Work?

Company chairman Lin Zhiyong, known for his personal achievements including climbing Mount Everest slopes, introduced the incentive program at Guangdong Dongpo Paper Co. to encourage employee fitness. After dedicating over three years to promoting exercise among staff, the company will use an app to track and record the physical activity of its approximately 100 employees.

Employees at Guangdong Dongpo Paper Co. face reductions in their annual bonuses if they fall short of the activity targets. Those logging under 25 miles monthly receive 60% of their total bonus, while those achieving only 12 miles receive just 30% of their annual bonus.

Why Is This Chinese Company Doing This?

Guangdong Dongpo Paper Co. offers incentives to boost employee participation in its fitness program, such as rewarding those who achieve 31 miles for six straight months with new running shoes. Chairman Lin Zhiyong reported positive feedback from employees, with one noting the dual benefits of exercise and financial rewards.

Some comments on the fitness incentive plan at Guangdong Dongpo Paper Co. posted on Weibo expressed skepticism and mockery. Users joked about the high physical activity requirements, suggesting they turned employees into long-distance runners.

Others speculated about the company’s future, suggesting potential financial challenges. Dongguan, where the company is located, is an industrial city in southeast China near Hong Kong, with a population of approximately 7.5 million.
