Hareem and Jonesti’s story begins in unimaginable hardship. Each lost their sight in separate violent attacks during young adulthood. Despite facing complete blindness—no shadows, no shapes, just darkness—these two found each other at a support center. Their connection grew into love, partnership, and ultimately, parenthood.
In the video, they share: “We see complete darkness at all times … the colour is black.” Yet in that darkness, they started something beautiful together.
Facing Doubt Before Delivery
When Jonesti became pregnant, friends, family, and even the couple themselves battled a whirlwind of doubt and fear. She recounts: “I was terrified—‘What if we fail them as parents because we do have a disability?’” Even their loved ones questioned their decision: “How are you going to care for this baby?” Many assumed that blindness would make parenting unsafe or irresponsible.
Hareem, by contrast, remained confident: “I didn’t have any concerns… but I definitely did [doubt] too,” Jonesti says. Their vulnerability shines through in these raw reflections.
Building Their Own Way Forward
Parenting blind is not easy, but they have found ways. Changing diapers, cooking meals, soothing a crying infant: they molded routines using sound, touch, and adaptation. Jonesti shares how, with improvisation, even diaper changes became manageable. They found new sensory systems and worked together seamlessly, teaching us that adaptability trumps adversity.
As Hareem says: “It is different being blind… but you just find a different way to do things.” Their partnership exemplifies trust, teamwork, and parenting beyond fear.
A Family Strengthened in Love
Four-month-old baby Anthony is thriving—and serving as a silent testament to what love and determination can accomplish. Their older daughter, Alani, also plays a key role, helping with chores where needed. Family support and community encouragement grew over time, especially as friends witnessed the couple caring for their son independently and confidently.
Defying Judgment in the Public Eye
Since sharing their journey on social media, the couple has faced harsh criticism: accusations of being unfit to parent, and even cruel suggestions that they might not truly be blind. Jonesti calls it painful but says they remain undeterred. “We’re not going to be comfortable with being blind until we can live how we want… So far, it’s turning out pretty good.”

Their video became a rallying cry—not just for blind parents, but for anyone fighting bias and low expectations.
Why Their Story Resonates
This isn’t just a parenting story—it’s a narrative about transformation, courage, and dismantling stereotypes. Hareem and Jonesti are redefining what parenting can look like, showing that disability does not equal inability. Their journey also foregrounds important conversations about support systems for disabled parents.
