What would your life be like if you were named “Loser” from the moment you were born? Well for one person, that is not just a hypothetical. In a bold social experiment that left many scratching their heads, a father decided to name his two sons “Winner” and “Loser.”

The impact of names on a person’s life has long been debated, but this case takes the discussion to a whole new level. How did these names shape the destinies of the brothers? What lessons can we learn from this unusual choice? Keep on reading to find out more.

Father Names His Children Winner and Loser Lane

In 1958, Robert Lane from New York conducted an experiment with his children by naming his sons “Winner” and “Loser” to observe the impact on their lives. He already had a son named “Winner” when his youngest son was born that year, prompting him to initiate the experiment.

In 1958, immediately after the birth of his youngest son, Robert Lane decided to name him “Loser”. Earlier, when naming his second son “Winner”, Lane hoped it would provide him an advantage in life. The decision to name his last son “Loser” stemmed from his belief it would be humorous.

What Happened to Winner and Loser?

Winner Lane and Loser Lane were raised together in the Wagner Projects in Harlem. Despite their shared upbringing, they developed into contrasting individuals. Loser excelled in academics and sports, while Winner pursued a path that led to criminal activities.

Yes, you read that right! Ironically, the boy named “Loser” grew up to excel in life. He earned a scholarship to Pomfret School, an elite boarding school, and later attended Lafayette College. Afterward, he became a detective in the NYPD, earning a six-figure salary. He is known as “Lou” among his colleagues in the detective force.

Winner Lane led a life marked by criminal activities, starting with his first arrest in September 1977 for aggravated assault. He accumulated over 30 arrests for offenses such as trespassing, theft, and resisting arrest.

The brothers, Winner and Loser Lane reported in a 2002 interview that they barely saw each other anymore. Winner occasionally contacts Loser for financial assistance, but due to Loser’s profession as a law enforcement officer, he limits their contact. Consequently, Winner and Loser have grown apart and are no longer close.

Do you think a name can really shape our destinies? What do you think of this “experiment”?
