The Shark Attack Details
The surfer shark attack happened near New Smyrna Beach, known as the “shark bite capital of the world.” Matt Bender, a 40-year-old surfer from Winter Park, was in just five feet of water when the shark struck. He felt a “lightning strike” as the shark bit his arm, which felt like a “bear trap.”
The shark quickly let go, but Bender’s arm was shredded. He stayed calm and used his surfboard leash as a tourniquet. He then paddled back to shore on his board. Once on land, he flagged down a young girl and her father for help. They got the attention of lifeguards, who treated his injuries before sending him to the hospital. He had surgery, and his injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
Experts Discuss Surfer Shark Attack Risks
Surfer shark attacks are rare but rising in Florida. New Smyrna Beach reported eight shark bites last year. Experts say that the area’s bait fish and surf breaks make it perfect for sharks and surfers. Sharks often mistake surfers for prey in murky water. However, most sharks aren’t actively hunting humans.
Surfers should stay in groups, avoid schools of fish, and skip the water at dawn or dusk when sharks are more active. They should also pay attention to local shark warnings.

Matt Bender stayed calm after the attack, which likely helped him survive. He’s grateful that it wasn’t worse.
