Traveling with toddlers can be a daunting task for any parent. From keeping them entertained to navigating airport security, flying with little ones requires careful planning and preparation. But with the right tips and guidance, it can also be a smooth and enjoyable journey for both you and your child. As a parent, it’s important to be aware of what to expect when flying with toddlers and how to make the experience as stress-free as possible. Here is how you can prepare.

Tips and Tricks for Flying With Toddlers

Have you already booked your flight and are worried about how your toddler will behave? Here are some tips to help you out:

1. Prepare for Bathroom Emergencies

It’s essential to be prepared with a complete set of potty supplies when traveling with children. For non-potty-trained kids, carry diapers, wipes, and a changing pad. During potty training, consider disposable training pants for the trip to avoid plane seat messes. Even for seemingly potty-trained children, bring a travel potty or emergency disposable training pants for unexpected situations without access to a bathroom.

2. Keep Snacks and Water Near You

It’s essential to carry enough water for everyone in case of emergencies and a bit extra for cleaning up messes. Since you can’t board with a water bottle, try buying one after you enter the plane. Stocking up on plenty of snacks, including soft fruit, cereal, and crackers, is wise to keep toddlers happy and prevent crankiness. Opt for water over juice to avoid spills and excess sugar.

3. Opt for Early Morning Flights

Booking an early morning departure when traveling with toddlers or young children is advisable. This timing reduces the likelihood of delays at takeoff and landing and offers a less crowded environment, as passengers are often tired and more inclined to nap, especially children.

4. Prepare Entertainment Options

To keep toddlers entertained during a road trip, bring along toys, books, and music CDs, but be prepared for these to lose appeal over time. Consider using a DVD player sparingly for screen time, opting for educational content like That Baby DVD. Utilize portable gaming devices and engage in interactive games to add variety and fun to the journey.

5. Don’t Panic if They Cry!

When your toddler becomes restless or upset during the ride, the safest option is to try and calm them down if possible. One thing to remember is that it is okay for your toddler to cry during a plane ride. However, while your child may cry, it is important to know they are safe in their seat. Use techniques like singing, playing music, or offering snacks to distract and calm your toddler.
