The 2024 Oscar nominations were unveiled on Tuesday, showcasing Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer” as a frontrunner with an impressive 13 nominations. Following closely, the fantasy movie “Poor Things,” featuring Emma Stone, secured 11 nominations, while Martin Scorsese’s drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” earned 10 nods. The summer blockbuster “Barbie” also made a significant mark with eight nominations.
Scheduled for March 10, the Oscars ceremony will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for the fourth time.
The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards bring attention to the dominance of “Oppenheimer” and the popularity of “Poor Things,” along with the success of “Barbie” and Martin Scorsese’s latest work. Both “Barbie” and Nolan’s World War II biopic enjoyed massive success at the global box office, each grossing hundreds of millions of dollars.
However, the announcement came with unexpected surprises. Greta Gerwig, the director of “Barbie,” was notably absent from the best director category, though she and Noah Baumbach received a nomination for the movie’s adapted screenplay. Margot Robbie, the star and producer of “Barbie,” was also left out of the acting nominations, prompting disappointment from Ryan Gosling, who was nominated for his role as Ken. Additionally, Leonardo DiCaprio, known for his performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” did not receive an acting nod this year.
On a positive note, Lily Gladstone made history by becoming the first Native American to be nominated for Best Actress for her role in “Killers of the Flower Moon”. America Ferrera secured a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in “Barbie,” a redemption after being overlooked for a Golden Globe. Justine Triet became the eighth woman nominated for best director for “Anatomy of a Fall.”
