Gerard McAliece, a 68-year-old man from Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, lived with a severe case of rhinophyma for six years — a condition where the nose becomes abnormally large, swollen, and distorted.

It got to the point where he couldn’t drink from a pint, couldn’t kiss his wife comfortably, and was deeply self-conscious in public. After lots of pain, mockery, and isolation, he finally decided to seek treatment.

What Rhinophyma Did to Daily Life

Gerard’s nose grew so much that it hung over his mouth. He says people stared, children mocked him, and he avoided social outings. Simple things became difficult — meals, going to the pub, even kissing his partner. He felt embarrassed and trapped inside his own body.

The NHS consultations didn’t help much — many viewed his case as cosmetic rather than urgent medical. It wasn’t until his wife urged him to go to a private clinic that he found hope.

The Turning Point: The Ever Clinic’s Surgeons

Gerard’s case was described as one of the most serious the Ever Clinic specialists had seen. The growth was extensive, involving both tissue and skin; the nose was severely enlarged, distorted, and affected his appearance and comfort.

In one lengthy surgical session, surgeons reduced the excess tissue. They reshaped his nose, removed bulging skin and underlying growths, and aimed to restore its natural shape. The operation was cosmetically challenging — the surgeons had to balance removing enough tissue to make a difference while preserving natural form and function.

Recovering More Than Looks

After surgery, Gerard’s transformation was dramatic. Not only did his nose shrink to a healthier, more “normal” size, but he regained the ability to enjoy everyday life again without dread. He could drink normally, kiss his wife without obstruction, leave the house without feeling ashamed — small joys many take for granted.

Beyond the physical, there was emotional healing. The stares diminished, the shame lifted. Family members were surprised by the change: his wife says they hadn’t told relatives about the procedure, so their reactions to his post-op appearance were pure and unfiltered.

Rhinophyma: What It Is & How It’s Treated

Rhinophyma is a progressive condition, usually linked to rosacea, that causes the nose to thicken due to overgrowth of sebaceous glands and connective tissue. It’s often gradual, and in some advanced cases, the growth becomes severe enough to interfere with function (breathing, eating) and self-esteem.

Medical treatments (creams, antibiotics) often help early or mild cases. But in advanced stages like Gerard’s, surgery is often the most effective route. Techniques include surgical excision, laser ablation (for tissue reduction), electrocautery, and other methods to sculpt the nose back to a more typical shape. Recovery can involve swelling, tenderness, dressings, and taking care to avoid infections.

Why This Matters

Gerard’s story is more than just cosmetic surgery; it’s about dignity, quality of life, and reclaiming identity. Conditions like rhinophyma can isolate people socially, mentally, and physically. Surgical intervention — when done well — can change lives, not just faces.

This case also highlights how difficult it can be to get medical attention when conditions are first dismissed as cosmetic or non-urgent. It’s a reminder that visible conditions can carry deep invisible weight.
