Since June 6, federal agents from ICE, DHS, FBI, and ATF have executed coordinated immigration raids across Los Angeles, including in the Fashion District, Home Depot lots, and near garment warehouses.
At least 44 people were arrested for alleged immigration violations—some reports suggest over 300 detentions—sparking days of protests and clashes across the city.
Community Outrage & Growing Protests
Affected communities—especially Latino and immigrant families—described the raids as “terrorizing,” with tear gas, stun grenades, and aggressive tactics used during protests close to ICE field offices and detention centers. Protesters in Paramount and Compton joined downtown rallies. In one confrontation, union leader David Huerta was arrested after blocking an ICE vehicle, fueling outrage among labor groups.
Law & Order: Curfew, Clashes, and Troop Buildup
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass imposed a nighttime curfew (8 p.m.–6 a.m.) in the core downtown district following property damage and looting around federal buildings. Over 150 arrests were made, many for “failure to disperse.” The federal government deployed 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines, later expanded to 4,100 Guard members and 700 Marines, without state approval—a move challenged in court by California officials.

Federal-State Showdown
President Trump defended the deployments, warning of stronger responses to future unrest and accusing protesters of being “paid troublemakers.” Governors Gavin Newsom and Karen Bass condemned the move, filing lawsuits against federal overreach and calling it a misuse of military power. The ACLU echoed these concerns and said legal action was likely.
How This Reflects National Tensions
Los Angeles is now a focal point in a broader national wave of protests and ICE operations in Southern California and cities like Austin and Portland. While echoes of authority clashes exist, this unrest is significantly smaller in scale than historic events like the 1992 Rodney King riots.

What Happens Next
- Legal paths ahead – California’s challenge to military presence heads to court.
- Reprisal risk – Trump has signaled further deployment to suppress unrest.
- Impact on families – Hundreds of detained families still await clarity on their loved ones—many report no word from ICE.
