In a historic move, Isabelle St. Cyr is set to become the first openly trans woman to compete in the Miss Maine USA pageant.

The 24-year-old from Monson, Maine, will participate in the upcoming competition scheduled for May 10–11 in Portland, marking a significant moment in the pageant’s history.

A Journey of Resilience for Trans People

St. Cyr’s path to the pageant stage has been one of determination and perseverance. Moreover, reflecting on her experiences, she likened starting pageants at 24 to beginning cheerleading at 14, noting the challenges of entering a field where many have years of experience.

Despite facing adversity, she emphasized her belief in passion and drive over experience, stating, “I believe I have everything it takes to be Miss Maine USA, and I know that no amount of experience can match a true passion and drive to accomplish something”.

Embracing the Pageant Program

St. Cyr’s decision to enter the pageant was driven by her longstanding admiration for such competitions. She expressed her excitement about using this platform to share her story and inspire others, particularly in a time when transgender individuals face increasing scrutiny. Her participation comes amid national debates on transgender rights, highlighting the significance of her presence in the pageant.

A Supportive Environment

Additionally, the Miss Maine USA pageant operates under the Miss Universe Organization. This amended its rules in 2012 to allow transgender women to compete. St. Cyr praised the organization’s inclusivity, stating, “They’ve opened up and changed the organization for the better, which is why I feel so proud to be with this organization rather than some others that maybe aren’t so open and welcoming to all women”.
