Who needs science-fiction, when you have real-life stories like this? Plot twist after plot twist, this Indian man has a fascinating story up his sleeves. What was first called the first pregnant man story in history, turned from a possible tumor to something even more shocking! This man with a twin inside only found out about his twin’s remains after 36 years of living with pain and agony. This is Sanju Bhagat’s full story.

The Man With a Twin Inside of Him

Sanju Bhagat, born in Nagpur, India, in 1963, became known as the ‘pregnant man’ within his community due to a persistent and prominently bulging stomach. Early in his life, there were no indications of medical abnormalities. He even worked on a farm to support his family. However, in his 20s, his life took a challenging turn as his stomach inexplicably expanded to an alarming size.

This peculiar situation raised eyebrows, considering Bhagat’s difficult circumstances and the scarcity of food in his life. His struggle to make ends meet added an extra layer of complexity to the mystery surrounding his bulging belly. Despite the apparent contradiction between his limited access to nourishment and the dramatic increase in his abdominal size, the ‘pregnant man’ phenomenon became a source of both amusement and bewilderment in his small community.

Why Didn’t Bhagat Go to the Doctor?

Despite facing constant laughter and his family’s worried pleas, Sanju Bhagat remained focused on working and providing for his family, ignoring his increasingly large stomach. He resisted taking time off work and getting checked, determined to continue his responsibilities.

However, in 1999, Bhagat was forced to seek medical attention when the bulge in his stomach pressed against his diaphragm, impeding his ability to breathe. Upon seeing his giant belly, Dr. Ajay Mehta initially suspected a tumor, but as events unfolded, it became clear that the reality was vastly different.

What Did the Doctors Eventually Uncover?

In 1999, Sanju Bhagat’s medical situation took a startling turn when doctors, initially suspecting a tumor, decided to intervene. As they sliced into his stomach, a surreal scene unfolded — fluid spilled out, and to their astonishment, they discovered an actual human being inside. According to an account from a doctor involved in the procedure, the unfolding events were both horrifying and perplexing.

The doctor recalled:

“He just put his hand inside and he said there are a lot of bones inside. First, one limb came out, then another limb came out. Then some part of genitalia, then some part of hair, some limbs, jaws, limbs, hair. We were horrified. We were confused and amazed…To my surprise and horror, I could shake hands with somebody inside. It was a bit shocking for me.”

“Vanishing Twin Syndrome” or “Fetus-in-Fetu”?

Amidst the shock, the medical team initially considered the possibility of “vanishing twin syndrome,” a condition where one twin dies during pregnancy and is reabsorbed. However, as the pieces of the puzzle came together, it became evident that Bhagat was a rare case of “fetus in fetu.” In this extremely uncommon condition, one twin develops inside the body of the other, leading to a situation where a person is born with their twin sibling growing within them. The revelation added a layer of complexity to Bhagat’s medical history, marking a unique and medically intriguing case.

What would you do in this situation? Would you have immediately gone to the doctor?
