Marvel Studios has officially postponed the release of its next two Avengers films. Avengers: Doomsday is now set to premiere on December 18, 2026, moving from its original May 1, 2026 date.

Similarly, Avengers: Secret Wars has been delayed from May 7, 2027, to December 17, 2027. These shifts are part of a broader restructuring within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Behind the Delays

The delays stem from multiple factors, including the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike, which disrupted script development. Additionally, the removal of Jonathan Majors, who was set to portray Kang the Conqueror, led to significant narrative adjustments. Marvel Studios is now focusing on Doctor Doom as the central antagonist, with Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the role.

A Star-Studded Ensemble

Avengers: Doomsday promises a massive ensemble cast, bringing together characters from previous Avengers films, the X-Men, and the Fantastic Four. Notable returns include Chris Evans in an undisclosed role and the introduction of the Fantastic Four, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Production Timeline

Filming for Avengers: Doomsday commenced in April 2025 at Pinewood Studios in England and is expected to continue for approximately six months. Moreover, the Russo brothers, known for directing Infinity War and Endgame, are at the helm, with Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely handling the script. Avengers: Secret Wars is currently in development, with filming slated to begin in mid-2026.

Impact on the MCU Timeline

These delays have a cascading effect on the MCU’s Phase Six schedule. To fill the gap left by Avengers: Doomsday, Disney has slated The Devil Wears Prada 2 for release on May 1, 2026. Meanwhile, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for July 31, 2026, promising a fresh arc for Peter Parker.

Fan Reactions and Future Expectations

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from Marvel fans. While some expressed disappointment over the extended wait, others welcomed the delay as a chance for the studio to refine its storytelling, especially after criticisms of recent MCU installments for feeling rushed or unfocused. Online forums and social media platforms have buzzed with speculation about plotlines, character returns, and how Doctor Doom’s introduction might reshape the franchise.

Critics note that Marvel is under increasing pressure to deliver standout narratives in an era where superhero fatigue is setting in. With DC’s rebooted universe gaining traction and non-superhero franchises like Dune and Avatar dominating box offices, Marvel’s success hinges on more than just star-studded casts. The stakes for Doomsday and Secret Wars are higher than ever—not just for fans but for the future of the MCU itself.
