As part of Barbie’s 65th anniversary celebration, Mattel is launching a global lineup of unique dolls representing influential women. This comes alongside a limited edition doll inspired by the original 1959 Barbie. Additionally, the company is introducing various new toys and products to honor over six decades of inspiring girls and women to pursue their dreams and aspirations.

Who Is Being Honored for a Women’s Day Barbie This Year?

Actors Helen Mirren and Viola Davis, singers Shania Twain and Kylie Minogue, influencer Maira Gomez, model Nicole Fujita, director Lila Avilés, and comedian Enissa Amani were each honored with their own Barbie dolls. While these unique dolls are not available for sale, Mattel has previously released similar one-of-a-kind dolls to the public. This includes dolls such as the miniature version of supermodel Claudia Schiffer in 2023, after initially presenting it to her in 2020.

Lisa McKnight, Mattel’s executive vice president and chief brand officer, highlights the company’s commitment to portraying Barbie as a role model. Additionally, they want to use the brand to celebrate real women achieving remarkable feats. This year, they focus on honoring storytellers, songwriters, and actors. Moreover, they want to recognize the power of storytelling to inspire and connect people with the journeys of these remarkable women.

The Process of Creating the International Women’s Day Barbies

Crafting dolls in the likeness of each role model is a meticulous and collaborative process. It involves months of work by the design team. Additionally, Mattel’s creatives collaborate closely with the women to ensure that every aspect of the doll reflects their essence. This means everything from hair strands to toe tips.

Zlatan Kusnoor, senior creative manager at Mattel, was involved in designing Shania Twain’s doll. Despite his usual role focusing on Barbie’s social media, he found the process of meticulously crafting the doll’s features fascinating. Twain swiftly approved the doll, which was inspired by her iconic “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” video outfit that features contemporary pink hair she occasionally wears during tours.
