The New Mean Girls Trailer Has Officially Been Released
Move over Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan, there are new “Mean Girls” in town! Tina Fey, 53, is revisiting her iconic comedy “Mean Girls” almost two decades after its original release. She is now creating a movie musical adaptation inspired by the 2018 Broadway musical of the same name. But, can they really live up to the iconic characters we grew up with?
New Mean Girls Movie Announcement
In the upcoming “Mean Girls” movie musical, Angourie Rice takes on the role of Cady, joined by Renée Rapp reprising her Broadway portrayal of Regina George. The ensemble also includes Auli’i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Anantika, and Bebe Wood in key roles. A recently released trailer by Paramount provides a glimpse into Cady’s introduction to her new high school, showcasing initial interactions with characters like Aaron (played by Christopher Briney) and Regina. The trailer features Renée Rapp’s performance of the song “Not My Fault,” a track she recorded with Megan Thee Stallion for the film’s soundtrack.
Tina Fey, the mastermind behind “Mean Girls,” announced the adaptation into a movie musical in January 2020. The official cast was revealed in December 2022, and in a delightful surprise for fans, Fey shared in February 2023 that she and Tim Meadows would be reprising their original film roles as Ms. Norbury and Principal Duvall, respectively. The anticipation is high for this fresh take on the iconic teen comedy.
What to Expect From the New Mean Girls Movie?
The original “Mean Girls” from 2004 featured Lindsay Lohan as Cady, a new high school student navigating social challenges after moving to the United States from Africa. She encounters the formidable social hierarchy of high school, led by the trio known as The Plastics, consisting of Karen Smith (Amanda Seyfried), Gretchen Wieners (Lacey Chabert), and their leader Regina George (Rachel McAdams).
Lorne Michaels, the producer of both the original “Mean Girls” film and the upcoming adaptation, explained in a December interview with Entertainment Weekly that the goal was to blend the best elements of the musical and the original movie. He emphasized that it’s not a remake but rather a new interpretation. The intention is to capture the familiar essence of the story while making it relevant to today’s audience.
