South Korean actor Kim Soo-Hyun, renowned for his roles in popular dramas like “My Love from the Star” and “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay,” has recently become the center of a significant controversy.
Allegations have surfaced suggesting that he engaged in a romantic relationship with the late actress Kim Sae-ron during her minor years, leading to widespread media coverage and public speculation.
Kim Soo-Hyun & the Allegations
The controversy began when the YouTube channel Garosero Research Institute released a video alleging that Kim Soo-Hyun had been in a six-year relationship with Kim Sae-Ron, starting when she was 15 and he was 27. The channel presented photos, including one where Kim Soo-hyun is seen kissing Kim Sae-Ron on the cheek, purportedly taken during her middle school years.

Additionally, they showcased letters allegedly sent by Kim Soo-hyun during his military service, addressing Kim Sae-ron with affectionate terms.
The Agency Responds
In response to these allegations, Kim Soo-hyun’s agency, Gold Medalist, issued a formal statement acknowledging that the actor and Kim Sae-Ron had been in a relationship. However, they emphasized that the relationship occurred between the summer of 2019 and the fall of 2020, a period during which Kim Sae-Ron was legally an adult.
The agency refuted claims of any romantic involvement during her minor years and criticized the YouTube channel for distorting facts and spreading unverified information.
Kim Soo-Hyun’s Connection to Kim Sae-Ron’s Passing
Kim Sae-ron’s untimely death in February 2025 has added a tragic dimension to the controversy. The actress was found deceased at her home, with authorities ruling out foul play. Her career had been on a decline following a drunk driving incident in 2022, which led to financial difficulties. Reports indicate that she owed approximately 700 million won (around $483,000) in damages to Gold Medalist, her former agency.

Speculations arose suggesting that Kim Soo-hyun had pressured her to repay these debts, a claim that his agency has vehemently denied. They asserted that the debt was solely a matter between Kim Sae-Ron and the agency and that Kim Soo-Hyun had no involvement in financial disputes with her.
Brand Endorsements
The scandal has had immediate repercussions on Kim Soo-hyun’s professional engagements. Several brands, notably luxury fashion house Prada and South Korean cosmetic brand Dinto, have terminated their collaborations with the actor.
Prada confirmed the mutual decision to end their partnership without providing further details. Additionally, Dinto cited substantial grounds that rendered the continuation of their advertising contract unfeasible. Reports suggest that Kim Soo-hyun’s annual modeling fee is around 500 million KRW. Moreover, the potential penalties for contract terminations could amount to approximately 20 billion KRW.
