Former First Lady Michelle Obama has recently opened up about her 26‑year‑old daughter Malia’s decision to drop the Obama surname professionally, opting instead to go by Malia Ann—a tribute to her late grandmother, Ann Dunham.
This choice marks a significant, personal step as Malia embarks on her filmmaking career.
A Bid for Independence in Film
Malia first premiered her short film, The Heart, at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where she received credit as Malia Ann. This debut aligns with her growing body of work, which also includes writing for Donald Glover’s Prime Video series Swarm and directing commercials, like the one featuring WNBA star A’ja Wilson for Nike.
Growing Up Outside the Obama Limelight
Michelle shared on the Sibling Revelry podcast that both her daughters, Malia and Sasha (23), have been on a journey toward independence, which she described as a “push away” phase during adolescence. These transitions reflect their desire to be seen as individuals with their own achievements, not just as the president’s daughters. Michelle said, “It is very important for my kids to feel like they’ve earned what they are getting in the world”.

Parental Support Amid High Expectations from Obama Name
Both Michelle and Barack Obama have voiced their full support for Malia’s professional rebranding. Barack quipped on a 2024 podcast, “You know they’ll know who you are,” yet he understood her desire for audiences to focus on her work, not her lineage. Michelle added that the family respects her decision, even while they anticipate that people will still know it’s her.
Why “Malia Ann”?
Choosing “Ann” honors her late grandmother and retains a personal touch. Michelle explained, “We were like, ‘They’re still going to know it’s you, Malia.’ But we respected the fact that she’s trying to make her way.” It’s a nod to family heritage while allowing creative distance from the Obama brand.
Beyond Family—Building a Creative Identity
Malia’s career so far includes meaningful strides:
- Swarm – served as a staff writer.
- The Heart – her Sundance short film.
- Nike spot – showcased her directorial vision with real-world social impact.
By establishing a professional identity, she’s beginning to receive recognition based on her own artistic merits—an early win in a notoriously competitive industry.

Michelle’s Wisdom on Parenting Grown Children
Michelle reflected on what it means to raise children who grow up in the public eye. She recalled simple moments missed during her time in the White House—like singing along in the car with Malia—and emphasized how those everyday experiences contributed to family closeness. As adults, Malia and Sasha now better understand the reasons behind their upbringing and are gaining independence on their own terms.
With her name choice firmly anchored in intentionality, Malia Ann seems poised to build a creative legacy on her own terms. Her roots may be renowned, but her trajectory belongs to her, shaped by ambition, clarity, and a family’s unwavering support.
