Justin Mohn, 33, of Levittown, Pennsylvania, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole following his conviction on murder, corpse abuse, and terrorism-related charges after he fatally shot and decapitated his father in January 2024.

The sentencing marks Pennsylvania’s first terror-related life sentence in such a case.

Horrific Details Emerge

On January 30, Michael Mohn, 68, a long-time federal engineer, was found shot to death and decapitated in the family home. Authorities discovered his severed head stored in a plastic bag inside a cooking pot. They also found gruesome wounds consistent with both a kitchen knife and a machete. A 14-minute video showing the head and a hateful monologue, posted on YouTube, was a key piece of evidence. In it, the son denounced federal workers, labeled his father a traitor, and demanded resignations from public officials.

Evidence of Extremism and Planning by Mohn

Investigators found disturbing data on Mohn’s devices: images of federal buildings, bomb-making guides, and extremist political content targeting immigrants, LGBTQ+ individuals, and political movements. Prosecutors argued these demonstrated a clear ideological motive and premeditation. Moreover, Mohn’s attempt to enter a National Guard installation after the murder suggested he aimed to recruit a militia.

At trial, Mohn claimed he was conducting a “citizen’s arrest” on his father for treason, but the judge and prosecutors dismissed this as a delusion. The defense’s argument failed to sway the court, which found the act horrifyingly calculated.

Presiding Judge Corr concluded that the killing constituted a politically motivated act of violence and the posting of the video amounted to terroristic threats. As a result, Mohn became the first individual in Pennsylvania to be sentenced under the state’s terrorism statute for such an offense.

Family Trauma and Public Reaction

In court, Mohn’s sister described the betrayal as devastating, calling the crime unimaginable. Their mother, Denice, tearfully testified about how she found the body. Additionally, jurors were shown the video and graphic photos, with warnings about the material’s disturbing nature.

Prosecutors emphasized Michael’s decades of honest service and unwavering familial support, even after his son graduated from college. Moreover, the contrast between the father’s generosity and his son’s extremist violence was described as tragic.

Aftermath and Broader Significance

Mohn’s sentence included multiple counts beyond murder: abuse of a corpse, terroristic threats, making terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime, running with weapons, criminal trespass, and more, totaling up to 40 additional years consecutively. Additionally, legal observers view the case as a harrowing example of how personal violence can intersect with extremist ideology.
