Whether you are a TV Show Fanatic or enjoy movies more, you are definitely no stranger to the Oscars. It is one of the most talked about award shows of the year and fans, critics, and casual viewers all tune in to see whether their favorite movies will win or not.
Although controversial at times, with critics saying that some movies should have won instead of others, the Oscars remain one of the most-watched award ceremonies on the planet. But, this raises this question. If so many movies get nominated, and only a handful can win specific awards, what movie has the most Oscar wins in history? Well, we are here to answer this question!
What Are the Oscars?
The Oscars, officially known as the Academy Awards, are a prestigious set of awards presented annually to honor outstanding achievements in the film industry. The Oscars have been held annually since their inception in 1929 and have become an important part of film history and culture, recognizing and celebrating excellence in cinema. The awards are given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), an organization composed of professionals in the film industry.
What Are the Categories?
The categories for Oscars include Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Adapted Screenplay, and many others. These categories cover different aspects of the entire filmmaking process such as acting, directing, writing, cinematography, editing, and more.
What Movies Have the Most Oscar Wins?
As of 2023 (before the announcement of this year’s Academy Awards), only three movies have had the chance to garner 11 trophies. This includes all nominations from 1929. These movies are:
- Ben-Hur (1959). The movie starred Charlton Heston and it is still one of the biggest and most timeless classics. It is considered one of the few movies that is still relevant almost six decades after its release.
- Titanic (1997). This masterpiece was directed by James Cameron and featured a young Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. What is ironic here however is that DiCaprio did not win an Oscar for this movie despite it being on this specific list.
- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). The movie was a long yet exceptional masterpiece that served as the concluding installment of the Peter Jackson-directed trilogy.
