On Wednesday afternoon, just blocks from the White House, two National Guard soldiers were shot during what authorities are describing as a “targeted attack.” The incident occurred near 17th & I Streets NW, close to the Farragut West metro — an area normally crowded with workers, residents, and tourists.

Within minutes, the White House and nearby government buildings went into lockdown as law enforcement and security forces swarmed the area. Witnesses described chaotic scenes: pedestrians running, sirens, and first responders rushing to treat victims.

A suspect was soon taken into custody — he was also wounded in the exchange and is now under arrest.

Who Was Involved: National Guard Members & Suspect

The two wounded were members of the West Virginia National Guard, deployed to Washington, DC, as part of ongoing federal security operations. Moreover, officials say both are in “critical condition.”

Authorities have identified the suspect as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, reportedly a 29-year-old Afghan national who entered the U.S. under resettlement programs. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.

Law enforcement described the shooting as a lone-gunman ambush on patrol — not a random act, but a planned attack.

Immediate Fallout: Security Surge and Official Reactions

In response to the attack, authorities locked down much of downtown Washington, including key government zones, while they secured the perimeter and began interviews and evidence-gathering.

President Trump — who was at his Florida resort at the time — issued a statement calling the shooter an “animal,” calling the attack “heinous,” and promising justice.

In the immediate aftermath, the administration ordered reinforcement: 500 additional National Guard troops were requested to be deployed to secure Washington, DC.

Meanwhile, immigration and security policy discussions reignited: agencies have paused new immigration requests from Afghan nationals pending a review of vetting procedures.
