Nepal has been rocked by protests led largely by young people after government corruption, nepotism, and a sweeping social media ban sparked wide outrage. Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government came under fire for shutting down or restricting platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Discord.

The young generation felt excluded from decision-making, frustrated with stale political leadership that had cycled through 14 governments since 2008, yet failed to resolve deep-rooted issues.

Discord in Nepal and its Virtual Parliament

When at least 72 protesters were killed and hundreds wounded after security forces cracked down, the protests reached a boiling point—and Oli resigned. At that moment, many young protesters felt the mainstream process had failed them.

Amid the chaos and distrust, the youth movement “Hami Nepal” organized a large channel on the chat platform Discord, under the server “Youth Against Corruption.” Thousands of Gen Z members, both in Nepal and from the diaspora, gathered in this virtual space.

They debated openly, asked hard questions of leadership candidates, discussed the meaning of interim governance, constitutional reforms, and what accountability looks like. Real-time polls were set up; moderators encouraged fact-checking; there were mirrored live streams on YouTube to accommodate overflow. Discord became more than a communications tool—it turned into the de facto virtual chamber where participants felt they were choosing their own interim leader.

How They Chose a Leader

After debating multiple candidates for hours, including figures such as social activists, independent politicians, and a handful of respected former officials, the community coalesced around former Chief Justice Sushila Karki. Karki was seen as a figure with credibility on corruption and judicial experience.

Her past record—such as jailing a corruption-accused minister during her tenure on the Supreme Court—added weight. Once Discord polls showed she had majority support, her name was proposed to the country’s president and military leadership, and she took the oath as interim Prime Minister. The government also scheduled general elections for March 5, 2026.

“More Egalitarian”—Strengths and Limitations

Many participants and observers hailed the Discord process as “much more egalitarian” compared to the usual political backroom deals and party elite nominations. Youth who normally feel marginalized appreciated being heard; the online forum allowed a lower barrier to entry for discussion and mobilization. There were channels for fact-checking and community oversight to reduce misinformation.

Yet, the experiment was not perfect. There were concerns:

  • Verifying who was voting (some votes came from outside Nepal) was difficult.
  • Risk of manipulation via multiple accounts or by anonymous participation.
  • The emotional intensity of protests, damage to institutions and property in some cities, and the violence left scars. Moderators had to walk a thin line between openness and maintaining order.

Why It Matters for Nepal—and Beyond

This moment likely marks one of the first times a large-scale political transition in a democratic country was influenced explicitly by youth using chat / gaming-style platforms to pick leadership. It signals ways in which digital tools, social media, and virtual participation can fill gaps when traditional systems are seen as broken.

For Nepal, it’s a test of whether this kind of bottom-up legitimacy will translate into stable governance, anti-corruption reform, and an inclusive interim government. For other countries, it’s a case study in how Gen Z is reimagining political power—more direct, more participatory, more digital.
