Twelve-year-old North West, daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, has stirred a wave of online discussion after posting TikTok videos showing herself with what appear to be face tattoos, piercings, blue braids, and coloured contacts.
While many of the adornments are reportedly fake, the visuals triggered questions about childhood style, parenting, and how far is “too far” when it comes to pre-teen self-expression.
A North West Look Worth a Double-Take
In the clips posted to their joint TikTok account, North West is seen with bright blue braided hair, black grillz, heavy chains, and striking accessories. Most noticeably, she shows two “tattoos” on her face — a star under one eye and a cursive script on her cheek — and what looks like a septum piercing. The caption on one video read:
“Fake piercings and fake tatts 4 life.”
Though Kim has defended her daughter’s freedom to experiment with style, the visuals stirred concern from many social-media users, calling the look “too adult” for a pre-teen.
Parenting, Style, and Public Perception
Kim Kardashian, who shares four children with Kanye West, including North, has spoken in interviews about letting her daughter explore her identity while guiding her through it. On the Call Her Daddy podcast, she explained that when North decided to try blue hair or a bold outfit, she responded:
“Babe, if you want blue hair, it is what it is. It makes her so happy. I would never take that creativity away from her.”
But Kim also admitted that she’d stepped back when she realised one of North’s outfits might have been “a mistake in front of the whole world.” She said:
“It’s really hard … all the kids are wearing the same things. But then my daughter tries to wear it, and then I’m like, ‘OK, we’re never wearing that again.’”

Critics argue that while style experimentation is fine, the accessories and piercings — even if faux — push the boundaries of age-appropriate expression, especially given the vast reach and scrutiny of the Kardashian-West family.
Why This Matters Beyond the Trend
- Childhood vs. public image: The moment highlights the tension many celebrity children face — between being a normal kid and being constantly pictured and styled for public consumption.
- Social media’s role: With millions of followers on their TikTok account, North’s looks are amplified and subject to both praise and criticism in real time.
- Parental decisions under scrutiny: As fashion and self-expression among younger generations evolve, parents must consider how much control, freedom, and exposure are appropriate in a digital era.
- Creative freedom vs. societal expectations: The case strikes at the heart of debates about how much freedom children should have in styling themselves and how that intersects with adult ideas about propriety, age, and identity.
