Actress Olivia Munn opened up on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast, about a harrowing experience on a movie set that led her to reject a seven-figure settlement—and the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that came with it. The incident, which she described as “traumatic,” occurred during the early days of the #MeToo movement, a time when Hollywood was grappling with the fallout of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the systemic abuse it exposed. Please continue reading to find out what she had to say about the incident!

What Olivia Munn Had to Say in Her Own Voice?

Munn, known for her roles in X-Men: Apocalypse and The Newsroom, did not disclose specific details about the incident, the film, or the individuals involved. However, she shared that the experience was severe enough for her to file formal complaints with the studio. In response, she was offered a substantial sum of money—seven figures—to accept an apology and sign an NDA, effectively silencing her from speaking out.

“I just felt it was so wrong,” Munn said, reflecting on the offer. “At this time specifically, this was in the beginning of #MeToo and Time’s Up. This was the reckoning, the Harvey Weinstein reckoning that began it all. People were targeting anyone who signed an NDA, saying, ‘Oh, you only did it for the money.’ I was afraid that signing it would reverse any kind of validity to my voice.”

Munn’s decision to reject the NDA was not just about the money—it was about principle. She feared that the studio might leak the existence of the agreement to undermine her credibility. “I was concerned that the studio, in an effort to diminish my voice, would leak out that I had signed an NDA for money,” she explained. “I know this is a lot of money to you, but it is not a lot of money to me to raise my voice.”

The actress recalled a pivotal moment during a meeting with studio lawyers, where she firmly declared her refusal to sign the agreement. “I did not think about negotiating. I did not think about anything besides how disrespectful that was,” she said. Walking out of that meeting, Munn felt a profound sense of pride. “I remember feeling so proud when I walked out—so proud of myself.”

Munn’s decision to stand her ground is emblematic of her broader commitment to speaking out against misconduct in Hollywood. In 2017, she was one of six women who accused director Brett Ratner of sexual harassment, alleging that he masturbated in front of her in his trailer on the set of After the Sunset. Ratner denied the allegations, but Munn’s courage in coming forward helped amplify the voices of countless others.

Even in the face of immense pressure, some of us have the moral compass to do the right thing. As Munn put it, “I wanted to raise my voice”. And in doing so, she has inspired others to do the same.
